Lovely adult camp experience - even if you're not a birder

Hog Island is a wonderful place to go whether you're a birder or not. I went to the camp the first time during educator's week. The instructors are amazing! I am not a birder but I learned about birds, watershed, seaweed, plants, photography and so much more while I was there. I also learned that Hog Island is kept up by volunteers, the Friends of Hog Island (FOHI). I decided, after that week, that I would go back as a FOHI to help make other camper's experiences as wonderful as mine was. 3 years later, I did. It was still an amazing experience! Meeting and networking with so many wonderful people.

If you have the opportunity to go to any of the Hog Island "workshops" please, do so. (Educator's week, Teen week, Family week, Raptors week, bird specialists week, etc). Once you've been to Hog Island, it will never leave you!

This is the perfect way to spend a week of your summer. You can come solo, with your family or with friends. Plan for amazing food, beautiful scenery and great birding. There are trails to hike, boat trips to take, and sunsets to watch. Stay in rustic 1930s Maine cabins and spend some quality time outdoors with some of the best birding guides in the United States. This is a bucket list destination for birdwatchers, nature enthusiasts, and outdoor families.

My husband loves birding and wanted to attend a birding camp at Hog Island. The week he wanted to attend was an adult week - with a guest speaker we had met previously at another camp. The program was on bird migration. I like birds and can identify quite a few - but I'm quite satisfied with only general knowledge about them. Thus, five days of birding wasn't appealing to me. However since I'm an artist, I WAS interested in an opportunity to paint in an area of Maine that is known for its beauty! I read the Hog Island materials and was assured that participation in the birding activities was optional. So I packed up my art materials, my husband packed up his birding materials, and we were off! Hog Island Audubon camp is located in a beautiful area of the country. There are hiking trails, lots of picnic tables and chairs located around so that if you want to sit and look out over the water, you can do that easily. There is a gathering building with lots of reading materials. I attended and enjoyed the evening programs and learned so much about not only birding but conservation and other issues concerning nature and the environment. The staff and other "campers" were warm and friendly, and we had a wonderful time. There was not a single time where I felt out of place because I wasn't a birder. Other campers included both couples and singles. I participated in only a couple of the actual birding activities. However, I learned a lot about birding anyway. One day while my husband was off on a day long birding trip, I stayed behind - did a lot of hiking, did some plein air painting and enjoyed just sitting outside and drinking in the beauty of Hog Island. We stayed in the Eider room - which was perfect for a couple - a room with a private bath. It was the furthest away from the center of camp, and we liked that. There are a variety of accommodations available. The accommodations are clean and adequate - but not luxury. Each guest is given one towel and one wash cloth. The beds have top and bottom sheets, wool blanket (which we needed!), and pillow/pillowcase. We were very pleased with our room. The food is good - with an emphasis on organic, local and sustainable foods. The whole camp emphasizes conservation and taking care of the environment. So bring your own reusable water bottle. I brought my own insulated travel coffee mug, too - so I could keep my morning coffee hot longer. All in all, Hog Island Audubon Camp is a great experience - even if you're not a birder. And I imagine the birders in the group had an even better time.

The Hog Island experience this summer (2015) was exceptional. The camp is rugged yet comfortable. The campers consist of those interested in birding and conservation. The professionals in charge are knowledgeable and care a great deal that the campers have a great time learning and discovering. You are treated to family style meals and the activities keep you as busy as you prefer. The island itself is beautiful and charming. The volunteers and Friends of Hog Island personnel are welcoming and make sure all your needs are met. You meet many new friends and enjoy the cool and less humid temperatures of many other states during the summer months.
There are different topics each week, so you have choices on the weekly activities.
You get to see the local area by boat and enjoy a wonderful Maine lobster feast the night before you depart. A day outing on a local boat brings you close to the Puffin colony with many other birds to photograph. You have a picnic out on an island beach and learn about the history of the Maine coastal area.
You need to book your week ahead of time to get the best dates. Enjoyed the entire experience and recommend this to beginners and veterans alike.

Traditional Small Craft Association again used the Hog Island (Muscongus Bay) Audubon Camp as the base for day sailing in small sailing and pulling boats. The staff was great--cheerful, engaged, attentive to our needs. Facilities are in fine shape--rustic but comfortable and functional. And the food was just wonderful--fresh (lobster), healthy (fruit and salads), inventive (Pastry Puffins!) and plentiful. With or without an Audubon activity, this is a fine camp and fascinating slice of land and sea on the rocky Maine coast. The five days rushed past and at least one out-of-state sailor has signed on to volunteer next month.

Spent a wonderful week doing an "Art of Birding" camp about a month ago. It combined birding with art--drawing, song-writing, photography, writing, etc. We slept in cabins which were comfortable, but not luxurious--it was camp after all! The bathrooms are shared and it was a bit like being a kid again.

The food was delicious and generous to a fault! This is not a diet camp! It was, however, a place to learn, to make friends, to enjoy nature and to see birds I've never seen before--puffins, guillemots, various warblers, etc. Also a nesting pair of osprey on a platform near the cabins. The people running the camp could not have been nicer or more accessible. We learned all about the recolonization of puffins on the East Egg Rock and other conservation projects.

Simultaneously, there was a camp for teens, who participated in bird banding and other activities. We all ate together, so it was a nice mix of people. I hope to return some day. It was really a great trip and a great cause to support.

Hog Island is a place that gets into your soul and recharges your spirit. I went for a week in June to do a program, returned two weeks later to volunteer, and attended a second program in September. Hog Island rekindled my love of nature. I have returned to college to become an Environmental Educator so that I may introduce others to the joys of birding and nature.

A group of my girlfriends and I visited Hog Island for a week session two summers ago! It was an amazing experience.

The atmosphere is BEAUTIFUL! One of the best kept secrets in the North East!

I wasn't a "bird enthusiast" or anything of the sort before the trip, but my friend convinced me to join them. I have never felt more attune to nature, and the food was delicious!
