Very pretty with lots of shade. Not too much elevation. Nice views of the creek. Starts in town so no need to drive anywhere and park.

We really enjoyed this little trail. We went at the end of October so I’d imagine it’s even more beautiful in the peak of fall! I know many people say this trail is easy but that didn’t stop my husband and I from huffing and puffing trying to get up the elevation! We are from Missouri …mostly flat and we do workout but apparently not good enough! So if you’re like us take it from us it was a challenge! We seriously got lapped by an older gentleman and a woman carrying a baby on her back!!! A BABY! Like others said it’s pretty rocky so wear appropriate shoes. And the trail can be narrow in some places. The scenery is beautiful and the creek with the large boulders was like nothing I had ever seen before. It’s even more amazing in person definitely a must do in Aspen!

My wife and I set out to just do the Hunter creek up and back but we loved it so much that we kept going through the cutoff to smugglers mountain and the observation deck. Trail is well marked. Take your time and enjoy.

Perfect fall hike. Much of this trail runs along side the water. Mostly rocky under foot. Good work out but not difficult.

One of my favorite trails in Aspen! Winding through the woods along Hunter Creek and over it, this charming trail is a great workout.

This trail probably is the best combination of exertion and vistas. You can do all of it or part of it. It is a rigorous trail - take walking sticks or poles - and requires energy and stamina. You will gain more than 1000' if you do the entire trail and at the top you will be rewarded with some of the finest views of the valley.

I know this trail is considered fairly easy for many, but for someone just in town who's coming from sea level and not super fit, I found it challenging. However, the scenery is gorgeous and I would hike this trail again and again!

A beautiful scenic hike-moderate level. The views and tree lines change throughout the hike. Wear proper shoes for hiking the terrain does change,.

We will be in Aspen in September. I am wanting to hike up Hunter Creek Trail and back down Smuggler Mountain trail as some suggested. Can this be accomplished if we start out right after lunch? (have plans in morning to paraglide!) Also, can anyone suggest the best place to park so vehicle will be easily accessible when we get back down? Thanks so much!

Going down Smuggler's earns you no points, It would be better to go UP smugglers, across the top (follow the signs, very easy) and then down Hunter Creek Trail. The problem in either case if the heat in the afternoon.
As to the car, that is complicated. If you were to walk up Smugglers and leave the car in the parking lot at the bottom, when you go down Hunter Creek Trail, you must be careful near the bottom to take the fork that takes you to the parking lot near Smugglers. Otherwise, that is, the other fork, you end up on Rio Grande Trail which is no where near your car. If you check the Aspen hiking map - easily accessible - you can see what I am talking about.

I am looking at doing the loop up Hunters Creek to the Hunter cutoff and observation point, then down Smugglers Mountain this Sunday. Snowfall thru Thursday. Is this a safe loop to do in the winter? Thanks in advance

Can you walk there from town

Yes, you can. But there is also a wonderful bus transportation system RFTA. You can take a free shuttle bus to the trail from Rubey Park Transit Center in town.
