Altamente recomendado!!!

Hi! We are travelling from Canada and planning a trip to Death Valley mid May of 2020. We don't have time on this trip to continue on to Yosemite and do it justice, so we're saving it for another time. However we are very hopeful to fit in Mono Lake and the amazing rock formations there and had thought that we could drive to Bishop, spend the night, hike the Little Lakes Valley Trail, and then drive on to Mono Lake. Here's our question. We're likely in that area on May 18th or so. I know that no one can predict weather, but would anyone be willing to give us the odds of us being unable to do this drive due to snow (we're in a rental car - no chains, and not really accustomed to mountain roads in winter). We did get some experience last year in Rocky Mountain National Park when some unexpected storms blew in! We won't consider it if you say the odds of snow and bad roads are 60% or more. We'd be willing to risk losing a hotel reservation's deposit if you think there's a 60% chance that snow would be mostly gone by then and it turns out we can't drive there after all. Also one more question, if we did get stuck in Bishop and unable to drive farther north due to weather, what would the odds be of finding a hotel room for a night or two with no reservations at that time of year? Would that be considered "tourist season" in your area? Thanks for any help you can provide!

Unfortunately, the odds of the Little Lakes Valley Trail being able to be hiked (w/o snowshoes, route-finding & winter skills, etc.) is probably close to 0% in mid-May. Typically, that trail isn't snow-free until well into July. The road may not even be passable up to the trailhead anyways by that date.
Mono Lake should be completely accessible and gorgeous that time of year, though, Definitely walk the easy 1 mi. RT South Tufa Trail for the best views of the formations.
I don't think you will need to worry too much about snowstorms in mid-May at that low of elevation. It's possible, but more than likely it will be hot in the towns along US 395 at that time. Tourist season hasn't quite hit yet at that time. I always like to reserve all my lodging ahead of time on my vacations, but in a pinch, you'd probably be able to find something in case the unexpected occurs.
Lee Vining or June Lake are much closer to Mono Lake if that's the focus of your visit. Definitely have a meal at the Whoa Nellie Deli in Lee Vining overlooking Mono Lake while you're in the area.

Can you take a stroller ie Bob stroller on this trail and make it to the end?
Jeremiah Z
Roseville, MN2,910 aportes
Not likely doable with a stroller, unfortunately. The trail is very well tread and easy to follow, but there are sections you will have to navigate a lot of larger rocks along the way, making the stroller unusable.

Do you need some special permit or ticket to enter at Little Lakes Valley and is enough room to parking
Jeremiah Z
Roseville, MN2,910 aportes
No you do not need a special permit to hike in this beautiful gem of a place. But be sure to arrive by 7:30am to find a parking spot, especially on a weekend. If you arrive later, expect to walk up the road quite a distance, adding onto your hike.

How long (minutes and or hours to get to the first lake?
Jeremiah Z
Roseville, MN2,910 aportes
The first lake, Mack Lake, is only 0.7 mi. and takes probably 25-30 min. to reach. However, I would highly recommend going further as each of the lakes gets more and more scenic as you head into the valley. The trail ends at Gem Lake, which is absolutely stunning.
The hike all the way to Gem Lake in general is doable for most people. We saw children around 5 years old and people in their 70's at Gem Lake.
At the very least, head all the way to Heart Lake, which is 1.5 mi. from the trailhead.

The roads in the area are all very good. We don't have 4-wheel drive and it was very accessible.

How long is the round trip?
Artemis-rb
Belmont, CA28 aportes
We always have hiked passing several lakes up to Long Lake and I estimate it to be 2-3 miles round trip. It is easy for all ages and so scenic you don't realize you went any distance at all. The only consideration will be the altitude, the trail starts above 10 thousand feet.
