This is one of the best venues in Chicago to see live music, from blue grass to jazz to popular indy acts. Also, offers an amazing array of music classes for all ages and levels, including songwriting classes. And if you are looking for a high-quality place to buy instruments, this is a great place to do that too!

I attended a concert towards the end of Chicago’s World Music Festival at the School of Folk Music and thought it was a great event. Their performance venue (Maurer Hall) was solid; acoustics were good and I had a solid view of the stage even from up in the high balcony. The World Music Festival in general is a great event to offer because it exposes people not only to the music of other cultures but also to the stories behind the songs that are performed. I’m grateful that the Old Town School of Folk Music was a partner to that festival and hosted such a quality event.

I've been familiar with Old Town School Of Folk Music for many years, but never had the chance to actually visit there until a recent concert. Travelers should note that there are technically two locations, both just across the street from each other, so make sure you know which location your event is being held at.
I was pleasantly surprised to find that Will Call was open about 15 minutes prior to their official time, and was able to get my ticket fairly quickly. Since the doors didn't open for another hour, I had a pleasant conversation with the security guard, as well as other people attending the show.
When they say there's not a bad seat in the house, they are not kidding. My seat was in the tabled section, no more than 10 feet from the stage - and while this area can be very cramped (and not necessarily designed for us king-sized people), it's still a nice option if you can get it. The venue claims that no seat is more than 45 feet from the stage; as it's not a large arena and perhaps holds 400 people, I believe this is an accurate statement.
The sound in the venue is crystal clear - though, to be honest, since this show was just a solo performer using acoustic guitar, banjo, ukulele and piano, it wasn't going to be an eardrum-splitting event. While I normally use earplugs whenever I go to a live music event, they were not needed in this case.
The venue does offer a somewhat-hidden parking area, which one can use a credit card to access (and is not outrageous in its fees); I found both actual parking and getting out of the lot to be one of the easiest experiences I've ever had in over 30 years of attending concerts.
Refreshments are available; however, I chose not to purchase anything, so I cannot comment on the selections or the pricing.
Overall, this was one of the most pleasant concert experiences I've ever had, and I am looking forward to returning again very soon.

First time going to the Old Town School of Folk Music - great experience! easy parking and lots of great restaurants nearby. Once we were seated in the venue we were very impressed with the acoustics. Needless to say Delbert McClinton did not disappoint either!

This is just to agree with the other comment regarding the cafe server. She may be pretty to look at, but she has the personality and friendliness of a door knob. Customer service skills are non-existent. Just a typical Millennial. The older flame haired woman is no Miss Congeniality either. The whole place could use Disney-esque training or an old fashioned ruler slap. With their self-inflicted financial woes, they ought to be damn grateful for people who show up and pay for their overpriced concessions.

I am not reviewing one specific act. I will just say if you love music and look for variety this might be the best music venue in Chicago. Go explore, take a chance, you might be amazed at what you hear. If you are like me at all (I don't ike big venues) this is perfect and affordable with always great, talented performers.

This is an annual Christmas sing along that is a wonderful tradition filled with great Christmas music both familiar and not so but all delightful.
This is an event sponsored by the Tribune and has given over $600,000 to Chicago charities. The setting is intimate, lots of good fun and humor and great cast of musicians.
