This is a beautiful and peaceful wildlife area off the beaten path. There is a visitor center which is temporary at this point as improvements are made to the original visitor center. We were warmly greeted at the visitor center and given information and directions with a map. We did the self guided driving tour. We were almost immediately greeted by a family of sandhill cranes taking a walk down the road in front of us. We thoroughly enjoyed the seven mile road through the refuge area.

Stopped by this refuge twice. Once on Sunday when they were closed. Website said Wildlife drive was always open. We proceeded to drive past the temporary visitor center and down some roads which quickly became dirt roads. Went about 10 miles and were dumped out on a paved road way south of where we started. No signs on the dirt road should have been a clue to turn around. A few days Later we went back but to a different entrance which there seemed to be quite a few entrances. Very confusing. But, we found the wildlife drive. It was pretty and had some pull offs which were nice. Again, it wasn’t well marked and we didn’t really see any wildlife.

Whether you enjoy a free place like this is based on a variety of factors that need to be considered carefully. The seven mile one-way auto road winds through a beautiful setting of water and trees with great potential for wildlife viewing of all kinds. We were quite disappointed at the limited views we had but the weather was quite warm so the animals and birds may have stayed shaded more. The heat also made getting out and enjoying the views less desirable.
In addition, there were scores of flies, mosquitos and assorted other flying insects that swarmed around you and the car the entire time. I suspect certain times of year are better than others. A new visitor center is being constructed which should add to the ease of getting information and feeling more welcomed. Ideally, the refuge is a photographer's paradise. But choosing the right time that would make for excellent pics, enjoyable weather and a desire to stay, even hike, is critical to the experience you'll have here.

The main visitor center was closed for construction, so we went to the temporary replacement. There was a nice 2-3km trail set out in the woods. Neatly marked by markers placed in the ground. Because there were so little visitors, there was no real "path", which made it feel like a great "off the beaten trail" experience.

The refuge has closed the Visitor’s Center and the loop road so basically you can hike the Nature Trail. Website did not reflect this before we drove one hour to show our grandsons the up close experience we have enjoyed in the past.

Stopped by the Refuge on Thursday, Sept 23rd and it was pretty quiet. Saw a couple of Ruffed Grouse and that was about it. Came back on Sunday and it was basically the same thing. Love the place but I think the rain was not helping the situation.

Huge wildlife refuge with a lovely 7 mile wildlife viewing drive. Trails & boardwalks throughout the park, but the black flies were prohibitive! We managed a 2+ mile on the main nature trail on our first early afternoon visit, but when we tried to return for an evening walk, the flies were just too much to bear. Wished we had full nets to cover our faces! Had to content ourselves with 2 drives along the designated road. The afternoon one was nice, but especially enjoyed our second one at sunset. The pools are lovely & we enjoyed seeing lots of Trumpeter Swan families & the always gorgeous Loons. Tons of other birds & several muskrats and chipmunks & squirrels of course. We were disappointed that the Visitor's Center was closed (we were there during normal hours), but the brochures were available & very helpful.

We had looked forward to the wildlife viewing at the national refuge. The reviews and photos were very encouraging. Unfortunately we were limited in our time and ability to revisit Seney during our time in the U.P. It was pouring rain and was pretty cold. Even though we visited in the late afternoon not long before sunset - the time when the park closes but also the time when wildlife-spotting is supposed to be most productive - there was almost no wildlife. We saw some Canada geese, a few ducks (perhap blue-winged teal), and many pairs of Trumpeter Swans. The Marshland Wildlife Drive through the small part to the refuge was enjoyable nevertheless. The loons had already migrated, it seemed, as had the sandhill cranes. If back in the area I would want to visit in the summer and hopefully during a drier day when we could take long hikes.

Trumpeter swans are the largest waterfowl in North America, with wingspans of up to 8 feet and weighing up to 25 pounds. The population at the Seney wildlife refuge had a dark brown coloration especially of the neck due to the tannins in the water.

Seeing the many trumpeter swans in just this small part of the refuge was a heartening sight, confirmation that the species, once down to about 70 individuals in the lower 48 (all in Yellowstone), had been restored to the point that with a population 63,000 they are designated “least concern” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Based on good reviews, we did the 7 mies drive. The scenery was beautiful, all the pools looked similar. We only saw swans. I see turkeys, ducks, goose, squirrels and birds quite often in my neighborhood. But there was nothing there except swans. I went in early October.
We did walk the trail, saw more swans than the drive.

We drove through since our route had us passing and it really is beautiful. We didn't plan and bring binoculars and didn't stop for long to explore which would be worth it if you want to see some wildlife. Still a scenic drive if you're just passing through. You enter on a long road then turn left to take the drive route.
