As a huge Robert Ingersoll fan, I enjoyed this museum immensely. It is run on a shoe-string budget, but they manage to put together an attractive and captivating exhibit - not only about Ingersoll but also Freethought in America in the 19th century. The museum even has a few recordings of Ingersoll's voice, albeit on early forms of voice recordation. But it is still quite fascinating. In general, if you consider yourself a rationalist or freethinker or interested in its history, this place should give you a glimpse into that tradition in America, while also celebrating the life of the Great Agnostic

Robert G. Ingersoll (1833-1899), known as "The Great Agnostic," was the most celebrated orator of The Gilded Age. In a time before radio or television, audiences numbering in the thousands crowded auditoriums to hear him speak. His admirers included Walt Whitman, Thomas Edison, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Frederick Douglass and many other luminaries of his day. His personal crusade to free people from shackles of all kinds (mental, physical, social, etc.) led him to be an outspoken champion for freedom from religious dogma and superstition. He lectured on numerous topics including women’s rights, politics, literature, evolution, religion, science and the rights of the oppressed. With the change in times and the rise of religious fundamentalism, Ingersoll's name and work were suppressed. Fortunately, today's freethinkers are rediscovering and reclaiming the works of this extraordinary intellectual giant.

If you care to learn more about Robert G. Ingersoll, the Birthplace Museum in Dresden is a wonderful place to do just that. After viewing a well done introductory video, visitors are free to explore the museum's two floors filled with photos, articles and other Ingersoll-related items. There's even a little gift shop area. Don't miss the opportunity to take a photo with the massive bust of Ingersoll salvaged from the Beckwith Theatre in Dowagiac, Michigan.

Freethinker, Orator, Attorney, Union Army Colonel - Robert G. Ingersoll was a man with many gifts. We owe it to ourselves to learn more about this outstanding gentleman of whom Walt Whitman said: "America doesn't know today how proud she ought to be of her Ingersoll."

NOTE: The Museum is normally open only on Saturdays and Sundays, Memorial Day through Halloween, 12 Noon to 5:00 p.m.

The introductory museum presentation states that Robert Ingersoll "is the most remarkable American most people never heard of" -- and it does an excellent job proving why he is well worth getting to know. Nicely designed museum exhibits reveal aspects of nineteenth-century American history that we don't learn in the history books. It's also a lovely little house.

For those who like the smaller, out of the mainstream museums, this is one to visit. The museum is housed the birthplace of Robert Ingersoll. It tells life story of Ingersoll, one of the great, but often forgotten orators of the nineteenth century.
