This was a pleasant and amazing surprise. The rehabilitation of this abandoned mine site has been very well done and is highly educational. It was previously used as something of a local tip. It is well worth a visit if you're passing through Peak Hill.

Just a twenty minute drive from Parkes, on a good sealed road, is Peak Hill open cut gold mine. A couple of minutes’ walk from the car park is a great view of the old mine……bigger than we imagined. There are a few information boards that tell the story and a few longer walks you can go on. There are toilets too…..rustic but good enough when you need one !

There is a sign on the street indicating to turn to see this...firstly let me tell you a little about the town. The town is peaceful and rural ... population of about 1000. You will literally drive through it in a couple of minutes. But for me... this is where I chose to stop for the night. I had not thought there would be much for me to see, but ... the town surprised me to be completely honest.

It turns out that in 1889 gold was discovered here and then a town was gazetted in the same year! A post office opened a year later. And by 1918 they had the first silo in the Commonwealth of Australia.

So if you follow that sign this open cut is literally only 400 metres off the main street. The main gold bearing ore body in the proprietary pit was approximately 400 metres long and up to 80 metres wide and extended to a depth of 100 metres. The ore body was near vertical and surrounded by unmineralised rock, called waste rock. So it's quite impressively large.

There is a viewing area to take photos and there are paths around the cut so you can walk around it as well. When I arrived there in the evening, the area was bathed in a kaleidoscope of colours making it quite breathtaking to behold.

There are two walks, one will take you 30 minutes, the other 45 minutes. There are information signs and old relics to look at. There is a good size carpark and there are toilets at the site. (Although they were not open when I was there) This is an absolute 'must do' if you visit the town!

Short walk from carpark is main platform looking out to mine. There are other hikes but this was quickest. The view was great. We didn’t linger as there were big blood sucking mosquitoes everywhere so bring your bug spray.

Well worth a visit if travelling between Parkes and Narromine. Just off the main street and costs nothing to have a look and take a few photographs. No longer a working mine but just a big bloody hole in the ground.

We discovered this place through signage in the Peak Hills township. It is worth making it one of your stops if travelling along the Newell Highway. It is between Dubbo and Parkes. Check out the mine on google maps satellite view. Useful way to access a bite-sized piece of the mining history of the area for no cost, and to learn what is meant by an open cut mine.

The signage was poor half way through the walk. We did not know what track to take as arrows pointed in both directions. The mosquitoes were hungry and big, so we headed back to the car park eaten alive. The view wasn't bad, but would have like to experience the full walk.

This is a very easy spot to visit if you are driving up the Newell Highway. It is only about 2 minutes from the town and there is plenty of parking. It is then a short walk to a viewing platform that has lots of information.

You can also do a walk around the mine. We did this but I wouldn't really recommend it as you don't seem much more than you can from the viewing platform and, as others have said, the signposts are pretty unclear at times.

It is shocking that this was started in 1990 but that they "didn't understand the environmental damage".

Was interested to visit and plenty of signs to explain about the site. Great lookout over the big hole in the ground! Walking trail goes right around the open cut mine if you are that adventurous. But you can appreciate the mine with just a short walk from the car park. Only a few pieces of machinery left, the inside of a boiler, part of a skip and the wheel from a stamper. I like anything historic so I am glad I visited.
