I thought the house was lovely and very interesting but was VERY disappointed that this was a self-guided tour. This was not noted on the website and when I called for info, I was led to believe that the tour would be guided. Again -- the house is well taken care of and the brochure helped explain things but still I was disappointed. While we were in Asheville we also toured the Thomas Wolfe House and that tour was worth the money and made the house come alive.

If you’ve ever wanted to have a tour guide who answered all your questions, you’ll love this house. The tour guides not only know their history, they are more than willing to take the time to answer your questions. If you like local history, you will enjoy this visit.

My husband I were in Asheville for 5 days. We had a wonderful time. We used the tour trolley for two days so we could find our away around. We also used the vistors center and jthe staff had a lot of great tips. We went to Biltmore at night when it was decorated for Christmas. I would advise paying extra for the voice guided tour. I would have not known where I was in house if we did not use it. 12 bones was so good. I think if we were in town longer we would have gone back for more. We tried to get some pizza but were not successful in picking a good place. The art distirct was amazing. we spoke to Stephen St. Claire and his wife. What nice people!!

The oldest standing home in WNC. In a little more than 1 hours you can see and learn much about the history of the Asheville area. Very knowledgeable hosts greeted us with an overview before our self guided tour. Look for the 1840s map of the United States on the wall in one of the rooms.

This is a place I'd like to revisit at some time. I appreciated the history and information; the smells of old things, the interior designs and colors.....worth the visit for a morning adventure followed by a nice lunch in downtown Asheville.

It was very interesting about the people who lived in the house to present date. Admission price was fine. The woman giving the tour was very knowledgeable.

This is an interesting place to visit if you like the past and the many different ways people lived and survived in a much less blessed time.

We enjoyed our short tour of this local historical landmark and would recommend the self-guided tour if you have an extra half hour. Our friendly, knowledgeable docent walked with us through some of the home and shared additional tidbits of history, which was unexpected and very interesting. She is a local Ashevillian and takes pride in the area. The fee is $9 for adults but students are free. Expensive considering that this is just a tour of a small home, but it keeps the doors open and aids in preserving a piece of Asheville's heritage.

Me and my wife had a great time and were very well informed during visit. There were several rooms that displayed vastly different periods of furnishings. The tour guide's name escapes me, but was an older fellow but was very historically versed. Even though we were the only couple there at opening time, we spent nearly an hour and a half. Saying such, we went through the whole house and got to see every nook and cranny. The pieces of furniture varied greatly between each room, but even though, the guide was able to give a bit of history on each.

Where do you park?
Asheville Museum of History
Asheville, Carolina del Norte
Come in the driveway and park near the far end of the House. If those slots are filled, pull on around the driveway and park near the edge.

how long does it usually take to tour this museum?

Allow an hour at least for the tour. A docent will prepare you with a short video and general directions about the house. Each room is labeled with the decade that it interprets and there is text at each room to describe some of the objects and history. Late in the afternoon, it is a good idea to arrive by 3:00!!
