We have a couple littles that I don't think would do well on the hike, so we won't be doing the tour. Does the visitors center have enough of a draw on its own to make the stop, or should we skip it and try again when the kids are older?

Visitors center in years past has a great Jr. Ranger program thru the NPS . Not sure what impact Covid has on it. The drive thru the back of Mt. Timpanogas is magnificent with perhaps a stop at Cascade Springs would be a great alternative.
We are interested in the WILD TOUR at Timpanogos Cave. How much crawling is on this tour? We are in our 60s and have some minor knee issues. Do they give you knee pads by any chance?
Thanks

I wouldn't worry about it, your on your feet most of the time, you will have to manuver around some rock formations. Bring a jacket and enjoy

It shows two different tours cave tour for 8 dollars and introduction to caving for 16 dollars. The cave tour says it allows 16 people and the introduction says only allows 5 people. Other than the group size what are the biggest differences between these two tour options?

Ok Alex, let me try to help. The cave tour with up to 16 people is akin to many sightseeing tours. You are showed and told about the various formations, legends, how they were formed, etc. The introduction is a different animal. You'll be shown basic safety measures, how to navigate a cave system, taught what to take with you and why, etc. In short, you're taught how to explore caves for yourself!

Do I have to take a guided tour or can I do self-guided?

You complete the hike on your own, but you can only enter the caves if you've purchased a ticket for a guided tour. Buy online ahead of time!

I just checked out the Cave website and it says it won't open until May 19. I see reviews that were for times before that, like in April. Do the opening dates change from year to year? Or has funding been cut?

I am not real familiar with dates. It can very depending on how much snow was built up on the path over the winter. That could be the case this year.

Susan and David, the opening dates vary from year to year depending upon snow accumulation, budget, and the needs for repairs to the trail before opening. Because the trail to the cave is on the north facing slope of a narrow mountain canyon here in northern Utah, spring snows can easily make the trail impassable for extended periods, so we do our best to set our operating season and use our limited staff and budget during the period when access is most certain.

Does a Senior NP pass get us in for $4 (half price) if we take the regular Cave Tour? On line it seems that we will get the discount only if we do the crawling Intro to Caving tour.
Thanks

I would think you can use the pass for any tour. It doesn't make sense to have someone with a Senior NP pass to have to do a crawling more strenuous tour. I would call them and make sure though.

I suggest you email them directly. The weather can impact the opening as well as the time table for construction
Is this site open between October 6 and 15, 2017?
Jennifer, it's a great question. Our seasonal opening and closing dates vary slightly each year, affected by snow, budget, and maintenance needs. When conditions allow, we generally try to open in early May and stay open until about October 15. This year, however, we expect to close in early September to allow time for some important repairs to the cave trail, and an on-going project to replace our temporary visitor center. I hope to know more about our October plans by late April or early May, and encourage you to check our website nps.gov/tica for updates. Cave tour tickets are available on-line at recreation.gov no more than 30 days in advance, and it's a good idea to get them early, since most days sell out.

I will be 8 weeks out from hip replacement surgery when I visit, and would love to try this. Will be somewhat reconditioned but otherwise healthy and walk daily. Do have some restrictions on twisting, but can bend and squat to 90 degrees. Any advice on whether this would be doable?

I have been traveling so sorry about the delayed answer. I too was recovering from surgery and the rangers that I spoke to advised me not to try it. Based on seeing other after they walked the trail I think that it was a good decision. They all came back exhausted. Young and old all agreed that it was a challenge. There are so many other things to do and if it were me I wouldn't take the chance.
