The train ride was fun and we made new friends on it. The train car restaurant has a humongous selection. Very smooth and fast ride. Because of its route we were able to get to Katerini one hour faster than by car.
The tour guide, Damian, was extremely knowledgeable and took us to some off the beaten path locations along with the tourist ones. This was one of the two best days of the vacation!

If you main objective is Mt. Olympus, Ask yourself, is an 8+ hour train ride worth a 49 minute walk in a gorge at Mt. Olympus? Stunning site, but I wished more time was devoted to this marvel. Train tickets were received 1 day before the trip. Grab a bite to eat before you go. Lunch stop was around 2, and you get back into Athens after 10pm. Our guide was great. Lunch spot was good.

From the park to the mountain to the castle by the Aegean sea, the scenery and experience are nothing but mindbogglingly breathtaking.
You walk through the ruins and great theatres of the ancients in Dion, visit the beautiful town of litochoro and march up the Natural Reserve of Mount Olympus to the Baths of Zeus before making it to the byzantine castle by the sea.
The tour guide Damian did an amazing job sharing historical trivia and mythos, and he was an absolute champ all the way through helping with our dietary needs and photos and sharing great conversation.

This was a rocky start, train was changed to a bus due to train issues in Athens and we got taken to the wrong stop. Not the company's fault and they handled it amazingly, our guide Jason came to Katerini to meet us and take us to the tour. Dion was brilliant and Mount Olympus was beautiful 😍 the only thing is it's a very long day so be prepared for that, and the amenities are not great in the area

Unfortunately, the recent train accident in Greece has rendered this as a bus to local guide back to bus tour. As someone who loves train rides, that was an unwelcome surprise.
However, our guide, Damien, was wonderful. A native of the region, he spoke glowingly of the surrounding area, all while educating us about the history of Greece, writ large, as well as the local nuggets that make an intimate tour like this such a beautiful experience.
We toured the relics of Dion for an hour, then went to the adjacent museums for another 40 minutes. After a friendly, scrumptious mid day meal, we were off to a castle, with grand views all around. We headed off to Olympus after that, and we were rewarded with tremendous trip around the mid part of the mountain. Words cannot do the experience any true justice.
The tour does make for a long day from Athens (16-17 hours), but the six hours with Damien made the to and fro truly worthwhile. This is a fantastic tour for anyone looking to escape the hustle of Athens to the northern part of Greece, to walk with the gods.

First and foremost, our driver Monika was fantastic and she made the trip a tremendous amount of fun. Be sure to leave early enough to get to the castle before 3 PM, although from the outside it was magnificent. The ruins at Dion were remarkable, given their scope and area., and the “bathtub of Zeus” was absolutely beautiful and breathtaking. Dinner and Meze Meze was also fantastic!!! Fried feta with honey and sesame was wonderful.

Missed half the tour due to mistaking correct train station and therefore guide. Clarification of meeting point would help. Be warned that the train announcements can be brief and last minute! Mount Olympus was beautiful and was the highpoint of the trip.

1) Assuming that we have had a good breakfast, when and where are the best opportunities during this event to get a light lunch and snack before heading back to Athens by train? It's a long day, breakfast alone won't suffice.
2) Today is May 15, 2024, and we are thinking about May 31 for the Olympus trip from Athens. Are the trains running smoothly from Athens to Katerini?
