If you are visiting Puerto Viejo Limon area, the Chocolate Experience by Bribri community is a MUST. We were picked up from our hotel. Tamara, our guide proved to be a gem. She was knowledgeable, patient with our hundreds of questions, always with a smile on her face. She drove us with a private car to Bribri village and later the waterfall. At Bribri, an indigenous community we were met by Joel who explained in detail the use of herbs and plants used by the Bribri. He took us from harvest to table a chocolate making experience. We actively participated in the process. We had a delicious lunch prepared by Joel's family at their home. After we left Bribri village Tamara drove us to the waterfall where we took a refreshing dip followed by a coconut water refreshments. On top of that she helped us with our transportation back to San Jose!! Thank you for a great experience.

It was wonderful to meet the family and see where and how they live. Their cultivation of the land with coffee and chocolate trees was fascinating to learn about. Everyone was so kind. I really enjoyed that it was a hands on experience. You make your own cacao paste and touch and taste the medicinal plants that grow in the jungle. Our guide was amazing, and in addition to seeing the Bribri family, he took us to a waterfall where we got to see two sloths. Overall an incredible experience, and I highly recommend it to anyone.

I will say that the tours are a bit pricier than other companies, but it was great! We went on the indigenous/waterfall/iguana tour and it was awesome. Super informative and educational. Antonio was a great tour guide and answered all of our questions. Overall it was an amazing day!

If you plan to visit Limón, please take this tour. There is really nothing like connecting with people and ecology that are rooted in ancient indigenous beliefs and values. This tour was especially enlightening learning how the Bri Bri people support their tribe and community and seek simple accomplishments that improve the quality of their life and land, rather than monetary things or excess, like in our mostly capitalist world. The family was warm and welcoming. Ariel the tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about his native people and this land. He was very patient explaining and answering questions, and interactive with our group. He is a true Maestro! This was truly the most meaningful and memorable day of my trip.

This was a truly authentic experience. First of all the tour guide Ariel is such a friendly and knowledgeable guy. He is from the bribri tribe so he knows a lot about their ways of life.

Second the tribe itself is very welcoming and you can interact with them as they are also interested in you. You learn how chocolate is made by going from the source (chocolate tree in the jungle) to grinding, cooking the actual beans. Each step of the process you can taste ;-)

Finally the waterfall swim was very welcome especially on a hot day. Make sure it doesn’t rain that day, but Ariel (tour guide) will update you on that.

We had an awesome day of learning about the wonders of BriBri's culture and history, taking part in ancient tradition of cacao making, tasting a sacred chocolate drink as we made it and enjoying delicious traditional food in a bowl made out of a fresh banana leaf. Our guide Ariel comes from BriBri lineage made us feel very welcome. In every tale he shared with us we could feel the reverence, honoring and love to his roots. I brought some dried cacao paste balls back to UK and with each sip of this sacred drink I cherish those fantastic memories and dream of coming back one day. Thank you

This tour was the most incredible, powerful, important/significant part of my time in Costa Rica!!! A huge thank you and a grand appreciation to the Bribri Indigenous community for welcoming us tourists so warmly into their community and homes. Anyone visiting Puerto Viejo needs to take this tour with Ariel. Ariel, Bribri himself, is the incredible tour guide who runs Caribe Autentico! He is the best tour guide I have ever had. Ariel took us to visit the Awa (Shaman) of the community closest to the entrance of the Bribri Territory. I am so grateful and blessed to have been able to have met the wonderful Awa and I am grateful for Ariel for making this happen. I learned so much about Bribri culture, values, community make-up, tradition, spirituality, and Bribri language thanks to the incredible Ariel and the great Awa who took time to share Bribri community stories, histories, and culture with us as well as take the time to receive and answer all of our questions. Ariel and the Awa also showed us/told us about the different plant/natural medicines significant in their communities and their uses. So often the global capitalistic and colonial world believes “Western” medicine is superior and does not recognize the very significance of the natural medicines we have around us every day. It was eye opening to learn the many usages, meanings and the significance each plant has to the Bribri community. A huge thank you to Ariel and the Awa for sharing the significance of such plants in the Bribri community for medicinal and spiritual usage. Afterwards, the Awa performed a purification ceremony with us which I am also so grateful and appreciative of. This was not supposed to be part of the tour as it isn’t often we can meet with the Awa, however, Ariel surprised us with this visit which I am so eternally grateful for!Our car ride with Ariel was so informative and important as well; I learned so much about the relationship between the Costa Rican government and Bribri territory as well as the ongoing politics happening in this current moment, and the internal social structure/kind of governance in the Territory. Ariel has gone above and beyond in his explanations. I am so thankful for all of the knowledge he has shared with us. Every single part of the tour was incredibly significant. Ariel then took us to visit a Bribri family who also makes chocolate. Yoel and his family were so kind to welcome us into their home and show/share with us the vast rainforest/cacao plantation and the many plants/trees along the way that have such great significance and uses as we looked for Cacao. Yoel and Ariel picked out some plants along the way that produced things I had never expected. They also explained the history, spiritual significance, and accounts of certain trees in the community. It was amazing, and again I just learned so much!! After heading into the rainforest and obtaining the cacao, we made chocolate with Yoel. A big thank you to Yoel for showing and sharing this incredible process with us tourists. Making pure 100% organic chocolate from cacao as done by Yoel and his Bribri family was so significant. Yoel and his family also shared many more treats with us like the 100% organic cacao chocolate drink significant to Bribri culture and a cultural corn drink. I am so grateful for their hospitality and express my greatest thanks to them for sharing these treats with us. Be sure to check out the many organic cacao powders and products Yoel and his family make at their souvenir shop, such as cacao butter and 100% organic cacao powder etc. You can also find them online and on social media (Aiko Tsüru). Yoel and his amazing family also welcomed us into their homes after for a beautiful meal that Yoel’s family made. It was absolutely delicious and I thank them again for their warm welcome and feeding us tourists. It was an incredible meal and it was so memorable to share it with such an amazing/incredible family like Yoel’s. I am so grateful and appreciative of their welcome and hospitality. It was a blessing to be in their presence and to meet such an amazing family. I hope so many more people can come on this tour and will have the chance to meet the amazing Yoel and his family. After the amazing meal and great conversation, we thanked Yoel and his family, and Ariel took us out to a beautiful waterfall nearby where after a hot day filled with so much activity and walking, jumping into the fresh cool water was absolutely magical and the perfect way to end the amazing tour! I have so much more to say about this tour, but because I could write a whole novel, I will say that overall going on this tour with Ariel was the most memorable and important part of my time in Costa Rica. I want to thank Ariel so much for this incredible tour, for his kindness, and for how accommodating he was to everyone’s needs. I was a solo traveler and Ariel offered to pick me up at the nearest hotel to where I was staying and then dropped me back off there as well. The conversations you have with Ariel on this tour are so impactful and memorable. A huge thank you to Ariel for making this happen and for the wonderful conversations we had. Ariel is so amazing! It was a blessing to meet him and to take this tour with him. To further support the Bribri community, make sure to go on this Caribe Autentico tour with Ariel (it’s a must!), spread the word about this tour and support Bribri businesses! Once again, take this incredible tour with Ariel! It is an absolute must! It is an important and memorable time with such incredible people! A huge thank you to the Bribri community for welcoming us once again. I will surely be back to visit! Pura Vida!

If you’re looking for a package tour please don’t read this review. If you’re looking for a highly individualized and very reasonably priced private tour that will totally amaze you then read on!!

We were very lucky to find Ariel. He is a true local person , with great English and an amazing knowledge.
Our first tour with him was kayaking in the gandoca lagoon . It was so serene and dreamy and it’s obvious that he has a deep natural connection to his land. He knows all the animals and birds and can spot things you would never notice !
We loved the first tour so much that we booked another excursion with him in which we combined a private visit to a Bribri shaman. This was absolutely a stunning and very soulful experience. It’s heavily recommended !
We then went to a family cocoa plantation where the family took us in and showed us their bountiful land and crops.
I have attached a few pictures of our experiences.
Ariel is reasonably priced and a true gentleman!
You would be lucky to get him as a guide.

We were told to visit an Indian village. But when we got there it seems to be just a quick explanation how they make chocolate out of cacao. It even look like they come and do the "play" and leave to there own houses at night. A bit fake.No village what so ever. We paid 75 dollars including the jaguar rescue center en swim at a waterfall voor 15 minutes. We had a pickup at our hotel. But no lunch included,no drinks just a piece of pineapple. So my advice dont visit the BriBri. Not worth the money at all.

Good afternoon Sr or Ms, I totally understand your concern and dislike about the trip you did. i just want to be clear to you, in our website http://www.caribeautentico.com/ we do not offer any tour like the one you described above neither in our tripadvisor experiences. I am sure you are mistaken our company with another, perhaps you can check out your booking confirmation ticket and you will find the correct name of the company and the tour guide. I will appreciate if you doble check your reservation and write your complain in the correct website. Thanks for understanding

Our guide Ariël brought us to his tribe in BriBri. He speaks the language and does alk translations very well. He showed us the beauty of the surroundings and explained about the culture of the native tribes. We were welcomed by the Awa very friendly. He told us al about his house and his work as Awa.
Later we met a nice family, they explained us a lot about the use of plants to make all sorts of utensils and how to use them to cook or like medicines. Very interactve and interesting. We really liked to help producing our own chocolate drinks, might try this even at home if I could buy the cocaobeans. Afterwards we had a beautiful walk to the waterfall. It had rained a lot, so we could not swim, that would be too dangerous. The river was wild! But we had a nice snack/lunch to end a beautifull excursion. Thanx Ariël, we loved it😀
