I recently had an opportunity to visit Lord Egerton Castle, near Nakuru, Kenya with a friend on a clear and sunny day. It’s an amazing place with many rooms to explore and well worth a visit. A very knowledgeable young female guide showed us round the impressive building, and we saw it all apart from the rooms under the ballroom. Our confident guide answered all the questions that were put to her, and she deserved the tip that we gave her. I hope that all those that visit the castle also tip the guide .. its appropriate and important. The building is clean and well swept but I fear that visitors that don’t use a guide leave their scribbles where they want.
I would love to see the castle renovated to its former glory and the ballroom used for conferences and dances with the three main bedrooms used for wedding couples. Unfortunately, maintenance of this impressive and sturdy building by its owners, Egerton University, seems to be lacking. It’s beginning to deteriorate with roofs leaking and the once beautiful parquet flooring lifting in places. It will not last for long if it’s not cared for. It’s a shame that there is no a volunteer group to work with the owners in keeping this building weatherproofed and used.
The large front lawn is vast but so too is the impressive number bottle tops and litter left by visiting families and groups. Please take your litter home or put in the litter bins provided. The neatly cut hedges are great but the litter spoils the outdoor areas. The castle is well worth a visit and the staff are helpful and knowledgeable but please don’t walk bare foot on the lawn.
If anyone from Egerton University would like to know more about my thoughts do get in touch. My email address is in the visitors’ book.

Off the beaten path for the average tourist but nice find. The building is in not so great shape but those there are taking care of what they have and the grounds. I would love to see the rooms refinished to as close to original, as possible. Some of the rooms are being used to display not relevant information to the grounds. It’s nice to hear that Lord Egerton did try to give back to the community suiting his time.

The hosts are very friendly.
The gardens are beautiful, well kept and large enough for parties and gatherings at a small cost.
The artifacts are well kept. Everything is in place.

One of the most widely known tourist attraction in Nakuru.
Romantic and sad on the some time ..
Many even refer to the castle as the last remaining memorabilia of the Lord and his patronage. This archaic architecture which is a symbol of Timless beauty will teleport you back to a different era.

The castle and history is quite interesting. It's sad though that the place is so run down and most items have been vandalized. Also I really wish they had an enthusiastic tour guide. The current one is totally uninterested and kept rushing through it all like he just wanted it over and done. Good effort has gone into maintaining the grounds though, as it looked beautiful. If you are visiting with kids, carry some balls so they can enjoy the lovely grounds.

One of the most widely known tourist attraction in Nakuru. The inviting and marvelous mansion of the castle has expansive lush lawns and alluring colourful gardens on each of its side.

Unfortunately my experience was not positive. I had always heard it's a great place but the facility is run down with many of the historical items at the castle in poor state of repair + floors + ceilings. I think the facility has great potential if careful restoration was done to match the story of the castle. The staff are however great at explaining it's history.

I would love to shoot a gospel music video at the castle grounds, how much would be the charges?
Escrita el 28 de junio de 2018
We did a wedding video shoot last year and we paid approximately Ksh. 20,000 ($200). Let me reconfirm and revert back. Thanks

What are the entry charges or any other contingent charges?
Escrita el 12 de agosto de 2016
There are different charges for children and adults...the last time I visited it was around Kshs.300/= for adults and half the price for children...then non_kenyan residents have different charges...

Hi I used to work at Tatton Park in the UK. The owners were the Egerton family and the last Lord Egerton, Maurice, loved and lived in Kenya. If you have any information about the Kenyan house, stories, etc I would love to hear them and any photos too. One of the Farm Managers at Tatton Park is travelling out to visit Njoro in February and the more information we have, the better. We will then be able to exchange our stories with yours.
Maurice was an amazing man - he kept the most incredible records of all the animals he caught/shot and sent many specimens back to the best Museums in the world in the 1920's. A much misunderstood man who sadly never married due, in some part, to his dreadful mother!
Be wonderful to hear from you all. Thanks SO much.

Stories about Lord Egerton are told at the castle, the main one being about his hate for women...I wonder how true it is...
