Nice to visit whilst in the area. Beautiful walks over the viaduct and views are stunning.
We managed to park nearby easily.

This was our second narrowboat trip in the UK. This time we started at the Chirk Marina and spent 14 days in the canals. The Chirk aqueduct and the nearby Pontcysyllte aqueduct are both engineering marvels and well worth the time to traverse. Fair warning, traffic is heavier at the Pontcysyllte aqueduct between the narrowboats, canoes and kayakers.

Great walk along the canal and view from the aqueduct and a great experience when a norrow boat comes along as you are walking over the aqueduct

We stopped off to see the aquaduct after a day at Chirk Castle. We parked up on a nearby quiet road.
Well worth a visit, be patient enough to wait for a barge coming through the tunnel. It's 2 miles an hour speed limit so they take 10 minutes to get through. This was the first tunnel to be built with a towpath which you can walk through and circle round.
Chirk itself is only a 5 minute walk from here and signpostede.

We parked at the nearby free car park (signed Police Station) and walked the couple of minutes to where steps lead down to the canal. There's a lot to see in close proximity here - the small canal basin, the tunnel, the aqueduct and the railway viaduct. Even if you only have a minor interest in historical engineering, there is much to admire.
We watched two narrowboats arrive to begin their journey through the tunnel (you can just see the light at the far end) and then walked a length of the towpath in the opposite direction. Crossing the aqueduct on foot wasn't a problem, even for my husband who doesn't like heights. The walk was peaceful and the surrounding countryside very green. We watched out for swifts but didn't see any.
It would have been nice to walk further but we had to return via the same route to our car. And anyway, tea and coffee at the nearby restaurant beckoned...

Scary walk through the pitch black canal tunnel guided by a wooden handrail along the towpath, then you come out on to a spectacular view from the aqueduct perched above the river Ceirog below. Only place currently that an operational canal crosses from England into Wales.

We were staying in the area and visited the Aqueduct on a quiet Saturday morning in October. Hands up, I got confused and thought that we were visiting the slightly longer Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, about 4 miles further along the canal, but we thoroughly enjoyed this one; particularly it's proximity to the Chirk Viaduct, which carries trains - quite exciting when one goes over as you are walking across.
It is quite high, as other reviewers have stated, but the railings are appropriately high and the path broad, so you feel quite safe. A tunnel at one end - the first canal tunnel to be built with a path, enabling horses to pull barges through, rather than the bargees having to 'leg' it through - and a pub at the other, make this a pleasant walk.
Parking might be an issue on a busier day, we parked in a side street near the old Police Station in Chirk, and there is a small (only room for about 6 vehicles) car park at the other end.
Well worth a visit, as part of a longer day, but perhaps not enough here for a discreet visit.

Impressive aqueduct with some lovely views. Also has a train viaduct next to it. You can walk across if you don't mind heights!

Which café do you purchase the tickets for 45 minute boat trips on Chirk Aqueduct please? I have contacted one café and they know nothing about it.

Hi, sorry can't help you with the 45 min boat ride ticket, but, if you contact the Llangollen Tourist Information I'm sure they can point you in the right direction.
Thanks for asking,
CW

Hi. Is there parking at Chirk Aqueduct? And which is better - Chirk or Pontcysyllte aqueduct?
Escrita el 15 de julio de 2015
There is a cafe very close to both the chirk tunnel and aquaduct that has free parking for the walk and is lovely to pop in for a cuppa. It's just across the road from the aquaduct and tunnel.
