A lovely and unique museum which explores the culture and environment of the region through music, visual art, hands on artifacts, science demonstrations, and well designed exhibits. The museum is the labor of love of artist Elizabeth Corona who was motivated to develop the museum to help local children connect to their heritage and the geology and ecology of their area. This small museum packs a lot of wonderful insights into a small place. If it is not too busy, Elizabeth or a volunteer will be happy to explain the various exhibits in depth. Admission was 60 pesos, which is an amazing deal. If you are tired of the tourist activities of Cancun and want to expand your knowledge of the natural history of the area, as well as Mayan history, this is worth a visit. While the museum is geared toward educating children, curious adults will also get a lot out of it. We got a beautifully illustrated coloring book and some nice beaded handcrafts at the store because we loved them and were happy to support this gem of a museum. It is on a little dirt road off the main road in the small town of Leona Vicario. We had lunch around the corner at Lupita's which features simple but tasty fare in an outdoor setting. Bring bug spray as you will want to walk around the garden of the museum. There are cenotes nearby, but we did not have time to visit them unfortunately. This is just a 1 hour drive from Cancun. The Tren May also stops in the town, though you might need to take a tricycle cab to get from the station to the museum.
