The windward trail to La Soufriere is not officially open but can be done. I understand the leeward trail is not yet passable. The windward trail is in good condition at the beginning having been rebuilt since the eruption with not a lot a traffic. About 2/3 up, the trail deteriorates considerably once you are out of the trees. The trail can be difficult to follow with lots of loose material and erosion of volcanic deposit. When we went, the top of the mountain was heavily clouded with very strong winds blowing you towards the crater's edge. We passed on hiking into the crater itself and headed back down. The trip was about 4 hours up and down. There is no way I could have done this trip without a guide. The chances of losing the trail particularly in the clouds is too great. It was a good challenge and we are glad we did it. But its not easy so be well prepared.

We did this hike from a cruise ship. We booked Fraser Trunos in advance (as did some other people on our cruise ship). He met us at the port in a nice van. The drive to the hike took approximately a hour - the roads are very winding and I don't think there is a speed limit on the island. If you are prone to car sickness, be aware - the drive to the volcano is crazy.
This was a nice activity to break up the beach days on a cruise ship. The hike was challenging (be forewarned) but definitely doable. Wear good shoes, take a light backpack to transport snacks and take lots of water. Fraser advised everyone to take 3 bottles of water/drinks. We thought that was a bit much but we followed his advice and were very thankful we did. You are going through the rainforest - it gets hot! It took a little less than 2 hours to reach the top and it was beautiful (and definitely cooler at the top). Fraser was an amazing guide - he pointed out lots of little things that we would have missed if we were on our own. He was very personable and encouraging. Overall, we really enjoyed the challenge of the hike and being in nature.

My Wife and I had Fraser tours take us up the Windward trail and back down the same way. We are not hikers so the steeper portions were slightly challenging but the views and atmosphere well worth the effort. The crater is the destination but the whole experience is memorable. It's best to get to the top near midday otherwise the crater may be cloudy. We got lucky and it cleared up enough to take our pictures and enjoy the natural beauty. I would recommend a guide if only to keep you motivated and provide backup supplies. Remember to bring plenty of water! It took us 2.5 hours up and 1.5 hours down. Overall this is a wonderful experience in St. Vincent.

La Soufrierere Volcano hike is really the top attraction on the St. Vincent main island for people who like the nature and like hiking. We arrived to St. Vincent with sailing boat, left the boat in Wallilabou bay, where are mourings installed, so you can leave the boat there in safety. Another possibility to anchore in Chateubelair, but anchoring there is not safe, the ground doesn't hold good. From Wallilabou we took water taxi to the starting point of the trail, it took about 45 mins to get there in the early morning. The water taxi ride was wet, but it depends on the boat and the waves. We hiked the Volcano from the Leeward side. The hike is not easy, but people with average condition can make it in 6-7 hours up and down comfortably. It is worth to start early as possible in the morning, becausee the peak gets cloudy in the afternoon.
Important to know: Take min of 2 litres of water/person with you, some food giving energy during the hike, and a windstopper jacket. At the peak are strong winds. On the Leeward trail you have to cross a river at the beginning, so take a slipper with you which can be wet and sandy, so you can take on your hiking shoes after the river. The hiking trail needs average hiking experience, but you have to ascend 900m from the shore, and on the backway 900m to descend. The whole tour is a full day excursion and it is really worth it.

We took the Leeward trail and really enjoyed the well maintained trail and wonderful views. While you may want a guide, we felt we didn't really need one as the trail is easy to follow. A great half day! Views from top are amazing.

We took a bus from Kingstown to Georgetown, loud music and crazy driving for about one hour. At one point we were actually 19 (NINETEEN!!!) persons in a Toyota Hiace. Took a taxi from Georgestown to the startingpoint. Just ask some locals for a taxi. Remember to get the taxidrivers phonenumber for the return trip.

We started at a banana plantation. Toilets and a payphone was available at the startingpoint. The trail is well maintained (sponsored by EU) and easy to follow. Some gravel near the top of the trail summit. No need for a guide. Remember good shoes.

Coming from the US where our national parks and historic sites are booby trap free. You are in for a surprise with La Soufriere. Scenic and somewhat majestic if you make it to the top. It was well worth the 2 and a half hours it took my party to hike up the steep slippery trail. Keep in mind there are no guard rails and the trail is narrow and slippery if wet. Have fun on this challenging adventure...

Whether you're a pro or beginner, you can easily cross climbing the Soufriere Volcano in St Vincent of your list of things to do with Fraser as your tour guide. Pre-trip communication was excellent, we were told all we should expect and how to prepare for our early morning trek. Above and beyond that, Fraser came prepared with all we might have forgotten in addition to local fruits (fresh mangoes and pineapples), high energy snacks and water which kept us energized for the entire hike. The most important feature of our trip is the fact that we weren't run up the mountain but were we allowed to hike at the pace that was most comfortable for those in my group. Fraser was also great at capturing my groups memories not only while hiking the mountain but on top of the majestic rocks at the Owia Salt Pond which was also a part of our Soufriere package. By the way the Owia Salt Pond is also a must see! Fraser even placed our lunch order before we got to Owia so that by the time we arrived our freshly prepared meals were ready and waiting. Excellent customer service, great experience and ever better memories.
