If you're feeling adventurous, or just want to spend a hot day outdoors, without expense, this is the place to visit. You and relax under the gazebo, enjoy the tire swings and even cook on the site! You can even take a mud bath in the volcano ( ....at your own risk....) it's impossible to sink!!! The mud is very cool and soothing to the body, some parts are bubbly and warm and some parts are cooler. It's the one place where adults can play in the mud and not feel guilty! Hey after getting muddy you can just hike to the beach, and enjoy the scenery along the way.

It's not really so much of an absolute must do but if you're in the south area of Trinidad you can visit! It erupted in 1997 wreaking havoc in the little village of Piparo so it is basically a large parcel of mud turned to land covering what was once a roadway and houses.

This mud feels so good. It warm and when you put it on your skin and then take it off you can actually see the difference in your skin. I tried it on my lower arm. The pores actually look cleaner. A nice little place to visit. Wonders of Trinidad.

Wonderful place of interest for those looking for adventure and nature.

Location: hidden in the forest of penal. You can drive straight to the volcano if you own a 4x4 vehicle. If not you will have to park a some distance from the volcano and walk the rest.

Atmosphere: no facility, no tour guide ... You are your own guide

Cost: free

Service: none

Other: This could be a beautiful place to visit if there facilities, small mud pools to soak in, tour guides and museum giving a brief history of the volcano. Guided tours through the small forested area and proper access to the area.

All in all a wonderful place to visit

The fascinating Mud Volcanoes are located in Piparo. I visited these volcanoes a few years aback and as I recall my experience it was wonderful. The drive was also long but it was worth it because I had never seen a mud volcano before. There are more than one mud volcanoes on this location some may appear to be small while others may appear to be big. It is truly a wonderful experience if you have not seen a mud volcano before. Please Visit. It will be magnificent!!

This is a site to behold.

An active volcano (mud), but quite some distance from port of spain.

It took me 1.5 hours from port of spain with a guide.

The mud is said to have healing properties - I am surprised that it is not marketed to tourists and spas locally.

This volcano emits a clean, warm grey coloured mud which residence say is good for the skin. I have surely had my share of mud!!!

Wonderful and mysterious site. Set to erupt again soon.

My review comes not from a visit but from the experience of living through the amazingingly terrifying yet magnificent act of nature. This is the village where I grew up and which I had to leave in the aftermath of the eruption. I was awakened in the wee hours of the morning by rumbling sounds eminating from the volcano. It was dark and we could not see what had already taken place .As the sun came up we the villagers got the shock of our lives when we could no longer see a large part of our village as it was submerged in mud-houses,cars,animals,road,-all gone. As we tried to come to terms with the reality of this gruesome find the rumbling started again this time accompanied by violent earth tremours and we all started to run for our lives.Within a few minutes there was a very high fountain of mud shooting up into the air and in the blink of an eye another part of our dear village was gone. To the random visitor it may just be a mass of mud but beneath this mud lies the broken dreams and hearts of innocent victims of nature.

As a long time resident of this tiny hamlet in Trinidad, I was amazed to find all the references to my small village all over the internet. It is a small town with simple people living a simple almost archaic existence. There is nothing to do there unless you live there. There is the former drug baron DOle Chadee's residence on the hill that is now supposed to be a government run drug rehab center.
