Todos los años, a finales de agosto en la ciudad de Guadalajara, en Jalisco (México) se celebra el festival de mariachi más grande del mundo: Encuentro Internacional del Mariachi y la Charrería. La celebración comienza el último domingo de agosto con un desfile por las calles principales de Guadalajara y presenta música y bailes tradicionales de mariachi. Las Galas de Mariachi en el majestuoso Teatro Degollado son los eventos principales. Los mejores mariachis del mundo cantan con el acompañamiento de la orquesta filarmónica para crear una fusión única de canciones clásicas y tradicionales. Durante el festival, equipos de cada rincón del país llegan para competir en el deporte tradicional mexicano de la charrería y llevarse a casa el trofeo de ganador.

2024. Seemingly not what it used to be. Sure the Gala at Teatro Degollado goes on but the "festival" really has nothing very particular for the public. This year they had performances in some Jaliso villages outside of GDL that we did not attend. Others scheduled in GDL were at a park in Tlaquepaque for one night, and daily at a few malls about town. We went to the Tlaquepaque event, which we found to be the most formidable, it rained like crazy the hour before, and then it was canceled. On the last Saturday, we looked into the events at two malls. The venue for one was to be at a food court. The other was at an uncovered performance area at the Andares mall. There, an hour before, neither equipment, signage, nor event staff were present. Again it started to rain and we left 50 minutes prior to it "starting". If you are already here, you might be able to make something of it but unless your coming for the Gala, it is not worth the trip here.

Groups from many countries come together to celebrate Mariachi music in its home, Guadalajara. There are free concerts all over the city, but the biggest stage is in the Plaza de la Liberación in the historic centro. Three performances every afternoon and evening are open to the public. If you can get tickets, the Galas de Mariachi in the Teatro Degollado, though pricey, are the epitome of musical performance, where the world’s finest mariachis join with the Orquesta Filarmónica de Jalisco. On Sunday, a parade through Chapultepec features all the visiting and local groups of musicians and dancers. It is a colorful event with dancing in the streets. ¡Guadalajara, Guadalajara! 🎶🎵

I first heard about it 3yrs ago. And Was fascinated by the pictures. This year I went and will keep going for years. We don't have Mariachis where I live so this was a treat. We went to the free concerts every night at the plaza. Heard many different bands, we sang and danced, it was a beautiful experience. We loved the city, food ,people and the whole experience.

There is no better place or event to hear the best collection of Mariachi music anywhere on the face of the earth. The annual international festival is as great as you might imagine, with public sessions outside on the plaza packed with enthusiasts and local families singing along to to songs of their native land. The heat and humidity was perfectly bearable, but there was an enormous awning and sitting under the trees in the park was just fine. But the real event, if you can score tickets, is inside the gorgeous Teatro Degollado, a well-bedecked formal concert hall with excellent acoustics. The majority of locals are well-heeled and well-dressed, in honor of the quality and style of the main performers. Three and a half hours of sustained power and enjoyment through song belted out with gusto and pride, backed up by the Jalisco State Symphony. One look at the crowd and you knew these were connoisseurs, from around the hemisphere, the U.S. and Europe. And all were on their feet as the curtain came down. Bravo!

The usual tours (Tapatio Tours, etc.) continue throughout the festival. But for activities related to the Mariachi Festival, check the official website which can be found by searching for “Encuentro Mariachi.” Closer to the date of the festival the site will have calendars of events and information on the many venues. There will also be links for purchasing tickets for the galas, which are not to be missed.

Can you buy tickets to the De Gollado for same day? there is no Will call on site and ticketmaster requires ticks pickup 48 hours ahead of the event whereas I'm flying in the day before only. thoughts?

There's plenty of free events and presentations all over the city. The only ones that are not for free are the ones hosted in Teatro Degollado and Teatro Telmex. You can get tickets for those shows in Ticketmaster.
