It was very unique and interesting experience. We arrived to the farm and started the tour with short movie. Then we were taken to the farm where we got explanations about natural color and how they are used and extracted from plants. Then we continued to the fine cochineal area and saw how the insects reproduced and extracted.
Finally we went to the laboratory area where we could create a dye from scratch, adding ingredients and dying some wool yarns. Very interesting and educational experience where you can actually see by your own hands on work the process of dying.
To contact the owner i had to look him in google and contact him from there.

I am a seeker of the authentic and really enjoyed finding Tlanochestli, which is about a 20 minute car ride outside of Oaxaca center. We were the only people touring the center and were greeted by a knowledgable and pleasant guide, Enrique. We learned a great deal about natural dyes, la cochinilla in particular. This is a great destination for those interested in the history of dyes and textiles or those who enjoy exploring off the beaten path.

I visit Oaxaca every summer and have done so for at least 14 years. I always try to visit Tlapanochestli at least once--it is always so fascinating. Last summer, I encountered a class of design students from Mexico City who were dying wool in large clay pots over wood fires. The staff is so helpful and do everything to make your visit an enjoyable and educational experience. Throughout the colonial era, the three most valuable products exported to Europe were gold, silver and COCHINILLA, a parasite that grows on cactus pads and which is cultivated at Tlapanochestli. It is a natural colorant which replaced the dangerous dyes which were being employed at that time in Europe. It is one of the few working "farms" where the highly valued red-carmine colorant is produced. Just fascinating. Look up COCHINILLA in the Internet and you will be tempted to make a visit to Tlapanochestli which is located only a few miles from the center of Oaxaca and which continues to be one of my favorite destinations in Oaxaca. It is located near the village, San Bartolo Coyotepec where black clay pottery is made into hundreds of objects. You can also visit the museum there. Go, you will not be disappointed.

This is such an interesting place for those interested in cochinilla and its use in textiles. They are passionate about cultivating these little insects for use in dying wool and fabrics and for use in food preparation and I'm sure many other uses. It's been several years since my visit but this is one very cool place, off the beaten track, for those who may be over saturated with the "traditional" things to do in Oaxaca

This is a quaint, small and homey research center, museum and educational facility dealing with natural dyes, but primarily cochinilla. It is definitively worth a stop while on route to one or more of the black pottery village, alebrije village and cotton textile village, on highway 175. You will not regret it.

My husband and I visited the Cochinea ranch a few years ago and we're planning to go again this year. It's on one of Alvin Starkman's tours but fairly easy to reach on one's own by car or bus, stopping just at the edge of San Bartolo Coyotepec, the black pottery town, and then walking a few dusty blocks to the small ranch. There's a guide who shows the cactus with the fuzzy little bugs and describes (in Spanish) the life cycle and process of obtaining that striking red color. There's a cute little gift shop with some kits for projects using cochinilla. You'll never take for granted the naural shades of red to lilac on the weavings again!

Oaxaca is the original source of cochineal red dye. Here you will see a production farm and learn all about it.
