Somewhat hidden away in the church at the top of the hill at the north end of Santa Elena, this collection of Mayan artifacts, coupled with well-done plaques describing customs and practices of the Mayan culture, provides an interesting sidelight to a visit to Santa Elena. This is especially true for visitors not just passing through from Uxmal or on their way to the Chocolate Museum but who are spending some time in Santa Elena (most likely for a stay at the marvellous Pickled Onion B&B). The fee for the museum is quite modest, maybe just a donation, but the displays have been done with care and pride by the local people and the setting is much more authentic in this small village than in a large, luxurious building such as those in Merida.

It takes a good museum to get my interest, and this got all my attention! There is a lot of information, but everything is set out clear and compact. Not as expanded or dusty as some other places I've been. I saw several maya ruins before going to this museum, which gave me some recognition. It could also be nice to visit this museum before seeing maya sites, so you get some idea of the times and the different architectures from the ruins.
If your interested in the maya sites, I can recommend this museum.

Though still under construction, this museum's displays are stunning and often interactive. Exhibits are beautifully explained, often in three languages (Spanish, Mayan, English). Lighting on artifacts showcases their detail much more than in their former location. This culture was advanced and extended way beyond the Yucatan Peninsula, as illustrated by their mathematical skills, written documents, trading routes, and inventiveness.

Combine this with a visit to actual nearby sites and pueblos, and you'll have a better understanding of this culture. Be sure to take time to study the exquisite embroidered "stories" of Mayan living, from centuries ago to the present. They're whimsical and bring the culture to life. (Note: jj_rog's review, "Museum and Ruins", refers to Dzibilchantun, north of Merida's periferico.)

Our visit took 1-1/2 hours; we'll return when it's completely done as I'm curious to see how the open steel framework "Ceiba" tree gets incorporated. Parking now free behind Siglo XXI, though it looks like there may be an underground facility in the future. Extra cool inside - you might want to cover up a bit. At present time there is no food, but a cafeteria is planned.

If your looking for great cultural experience, then the museum and ruins is wonderful. This is one set of ruins where tourist can actually climb the ruins then take a dip in the Cenote Swimming Lake to cool off from the heat.
