My husband and I took this class while in Cancun and we absolutely loved it! Chef Andres was very friendly and personable, and had tons of information about Cancun, Mexican cuisine, Mayan history, and Mexico as a whole. We're avid travelers and the tequila & mezcal tasting was one of our favorite experiences we've ever had in our travels - we recreated it for family when we got home and they loved it too! I highly recommend this class.

I recently experienced this marvelous cooking workshop with a small group of friends. It was EXCELLENT! Chef Andres delivers so much more than a cooking class. Not only was this one of the best meals we experienced, but we learned so much about Mexican culture and food traditions. The tequila tasting was just the icing on the cake! a must do for foodies and aspiring chefs!

Worth traveling to cancun just for this chef! Not only is he fantastic, he is so inviting it was like being in your own home. The food was so authentic it creates a spark for you to go home and cook it again!
We had a taste of everything from fresh ground salsa, banana leaf wrapped fish, chicken, bean tortilla soup (could have pored it on me) and a cold coconut dessert to finish. Not to mention the wonderful lesson of learning and tasting tequila with all mexico traditions.
I highly highly recommend this on your trip!!!
Gracias chef andres!!

I recommend 100% this cooking class which is even more than a cooking class! You’ll learn so much about Mexican culture, and you’ll discover a new way of enjoying Tequila and Mezcal. Chef Andrés was passionate and he perfectly welcomed us. He made me want to get a molcajete and plan a Tequila party when I’m back in France!

I can't say enough good things about Chef Andres and this tour. From my initial communication with him, until we left, everything was just excellent!
Chef Andres made the most delicious bread, which he served upon our arrival with some Mexican coffee. I'm not a coffee drinker, but I truly enjoyed that coffee with all the spices, and definitely the bread!
First off, we made a traditional Salsa, using the molcajete. I had never used a Molcajete before and really enjoyed learning techniques to "grind" the ingredients. It had a great smoky flavor due to the chile. Also contained garlic and tomatillos. Great start to the morning along with chips.
Next, we made a Mayan salsa - Silpak, which he described as "Mexican hummus", using sour orange, roma tomatoes, onion, pumpkin seeds, and sesame seeds. Thoroughly enjoyed this salsa also. We munched on the salsas and chips while preparing the next dishes.
Next we made Sopa Tarasca which was absolutely delicious! Ingredients included roma tomato, onion, ancho chile, garlic, milk, refried beans, milk, chicken bouillon cube, and lard. One of the tastiet soups I've ever eaten!
Next was Hojasanta - a fish dish cooked in a banana leaf. I had never cooked anything using a banana leaf, so this was a new technique for me. Unfortunately, I oversalted my fish, so this was my least favorite dish.
Pollo Pibil was excellent. I had never used Achiote paste before so this was a new experience for me also. Really excellent recipe!
Taco Gobernador - OMG! What a mouthful of flavor this was! Chef Andres hit it out of the park with this recipe!
For dessert - Maja Blanca. This wasn't my favorite, but was still very flavorful.
The Mezcal and Tequila tasting were awesome! We tasted 2 Mezcals and 4 tequilas. He also had a small spoon of something similar to chili powder, a local honey, a small piece of chocolate, lime, and oranges. He paired the liquor with those to create a wonderful explosion of flavor on my taste buds. Chef Andres gave us a lot of information and the tasting was such a great addition to the cooking class!
I cannot say enough words to tell you how wonderful this experience was. Chef Andres and his assistant were so hospitable and accommodating. I HIGHLY recommend you take this cooking class, especially if you're a foodie. He even taught my daughter some knife skills while veggies were being cut up!
I would take another cooking class with him if I ever return to Cancun!
Now, I just need the recipes!

Staying at a resort in Cancún, México? Get out and spend a day at Yum Cooking Workshop with Chef Andres! This was by far the highlight our week vacation in Cancún. Staying at a resort has its perks, but let’s face it, they often lack the experience of authentic culture of the area.

A day of Chef Andres’ cooking workshop is a perfect way to get a little taste of the Mexican culture. Chef Andres takes you through various courses of traditional recipes, providing a rich history of each dish. Along the way we got to enjoy taking part in preparing some of the dishes such as salsa and empanadas.

The tequila and mezcal tasting was a fantastic break, learning more about the history of these spirits, from an impassioned Chef Andres. The pairings with the tequila and mezcal such as pineapple, oranges, limes, chocolate, and chili powder mix were really enjoyable, especially exploring different ways to pair each with the different tequilas.

The hospitality and the food were incredible. We loved everything about this unique experience and would highly recommend Yum Cooking Workshop. Getting to the workshop was no problem for the taxi driver, and Chef Andres was very responsive.

If you are looking for an experience that gives you a taste of culture while also leaving your tastebuds wanting more this is the experience for you! This cooking class was perfectly designed by Andres to have an authentic experience and allows you to have recipes you can take home and enjoy for years to come. This was hands down the best part of our trip. I can't wait to try out the techniques we learned and make some empanadas or tomatillo stew back home! Thanks Andres for the great food and great conversation, we will definitely be back!

How Andres and his cooking class has 13 reviews and not 1300 is mind blowing. This experience warrants a wait list, and the top of any “excursion” list in the city. From the plantain&black bean filled empanadas, tomatillo pork stew, tequila & mezcal tasting, to the poached pear with vanilla ice cream drizzled with a cinnamon/tequila syrup (Purposefully leaving out several equally amazing dishes for an element of surprise for new visitors) - every dish is equally rich in knowledge, cultural authenticity, and Michelin level taste. Andres’ kitchen is only a 15 minute drive from most of the hotel zone, but gets you completely removed from the tourist experience in the best way possible. This is absolutely the highlight of our trip, and enough of a standalone reason to bring us back to Cancun.

On our recent trip to Cancun my husband and I really wanted to attend an authentic Mexican cooking class that was more than salsa and guacamole. Our experience at YUM exceeded all our expectations
We were welcomed into Chef Andres home to the smell of fresh baking bread. We spent the next several hours learning about spices, peppers, herbs and preparation techniques. It was a very intimate group setting with each person having as much hands on preparation as they desired.
Every dish, the Mexican coffee, empanadas with a plantains and black refried beans filling to the shrimp with tamarind sauce, was an amazing tasting experience. The poblano soup was so good we all wanted to lick the bowl.
Chef explained all the ingredients, the techniques and the critical steps with enthusiasim coupled with his knowledge of the history of the dishes. There were also several wines to pair which not only enhanced our meal preparation buy added to the final course tastings.
While some of the dishes were slow cooking we had the opportunity to sample several different mescal and tequila pairings. Again Chef Andres was both knowledgeable and enthusiastic in his presentation and in answering all questions. There was even a mescal worm for my husband consume much to the delight of the other participants and our hosts..
As the class ended Chef was so kind as to take us to a local supermarket to help us find one of the tequilas we had sampled. He was also so kind as to drive to our hotel the next day to return a lost phone. We sincerely hope he makes his planned trip to the frozen north so we can extend our welcome to his family. We will DEFINITELY return for another class next year.
