AHA Exceeded My Expectations
JC Dallas Texas.

Exceeded my expectations! I attended the two- week session March 4-15, 2024. I was very fortunate, and the school matched me up with host Carmen and her two cats, in a comfortable home located about 8 blocks from the school on Pila Seca. My room was separate from the main house. (I had a large room with a desk, nice large bathroom with my own private patio and refrigerator). Carmen would help me with my homework and she played Spanish Scrabbel with me a few times. Other students in my class were not so fortunate with their host family. Just speak up and talk to the director if you need to change your host family. On the first day of school, you take a test and are placed in one of many classrooms based on your level. The school did an excellent job of placement and everyone in our level 2 classroom were on the same level. Our teacher was Silvia and she was absolutely beyond amazing. She was very organized and used a variety of teaching methods. Everyone I met at the school was very serious about improving their Spanish language acumen. If you are looking for a school that is serious about providing you with multiple ways to improve your Spanish language then this is the school for you. The first week I signed up for the regular class from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. with Silvia and 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 communication and 12:30 to 1:30 Problems communications, both with different teachers. After the first week I only took the first class. It was just too much for me to be in class that long. Many students do the morning class and take a private lesson every other day as it is so cheap for private lessons, but you need to schedule private lessons two months ahead of time if possible. Now to the academics, wow, Academia Hispano Americana is a school and it is run like a school. The bell rings at 8:30 a.m. and you should be seated and ready to go because the teacher already has material on the board. After 50 minutes a bell rings and you have a 10 minute break to get refreshments, go to the restroom or socialize in the center of the school which is completely open air and is beyond beautiful. The bell continues during the day for class to start and to end. I had between one hour and a hour and a half of homework every night. That now brings me to my next point. I do not recommend you attend this school with your family waiting for you to get out of class. Some students had family arrive a few days before school began, did the tourist things and then their family left. We noticed that those that had family staying while they were in school, were tired and not as prepared for class. I came solo and I will return solo next year. To enhance your school experience, you will be offered multiple tours. Each week there is a 1.5 hour San Miguel history tour but they are 100% in Spanish. The Canada de la Virgin tour is on a Saturday and is one of the best tours I have been on in years. The English- speaking tour guide is an expert in the history of this pyramid. This is not a pyramid tour this is an amazing story telling history of Mexico, the pyramids and more. In closing, I would not do the 4 week session because I think it is just too much but you may be able to handle it. Two weeks is great and three weeks would also be good. If you can only do one week, then pay for two weeks and leave after class the following week on Wednesday so that you get 8 full days of class. Then work on your Spanish at home and come back again the next year! You will meet lifelong friends and we would go to lunch and dinner together. The weather is amazing and the food is inexpensive. At the time I wrote this review the homestay cost was $40.00 US dollars a day which includes an amazing breakfast. Do not do a rental unless you can walk to class. A few students made that terrible mistake. The cabs do not take credit cards and there are basically no UBERs. There are two airports (Leon and QRO) and I suggest QRO. You really MUST arrive two days before school begins as it is a 1.5 hour drive to San Miguel from both airports and you want to walk around at least one day before school. I know you are asking...what is the typical age? Well during my week most of the students were between 45 and 65. We did have a few younger students sent to the school by their US companies. I heard the summer has lots of college age students there earning college Spanish credit. Hope this helps you make your decision. I learned so much and had a fantastic time in San Miguel de Allende. See you next year! JC Dallas Texas.

I took classes for four months in Level 2 Spanish and it was incredibly helpful. The teachers are very friendly and engaging and break things down in a way that makes it easy to learn!

I learned a lot of Spanish and remembered some I had forgotten. It was fun and my class was small, only 4 students. All the instructors were very patient and knowledgeable and the curriculum helped us learn.
I took a placement test when I arrived. The school was beautiful. The main classes are in the morning, so I had time for sightseeing in the afternoons.

They set me up with a home stay 4 blocks from the school and two blocks from the main plaza downtown. The house was historic, beautiful. I had my own private ensuite bath. The family was friendly and also gave me my space. The food was good, but I went out to dinner with fellow classmates several times because San Miguel has excellent restaurants.

Their recommendation for airport shuttle was efficient and clean and comfortable. I was traveling solo and felt very safe.

Many of the students were retired and were in a full 4 week program. I am still working and I learned a lot in the week I had. Definitely a case of more is more.

This summer I had one of the best experiences of my life. I spent a month in San Miguel de Allende attending Academia Hispano Americana and living with a family. The experience exceeded my hopes and expectations. The setting of the school is absolutely charming with vibrant colors, beautiful buildings and lovely gardens. it was a pleasure to spend several hours a day at AHA. The faculty was exceptional. Each teacher and staff member I interacted with was friendly and helpful enhancing my daily experience. My teachers were professional and adept at helping me gain confidence and skill with my Spanish. I was amazed at how much I learned in such a short time. I attribute my success to the dedication of my teachers and the well-organized programs. In addition, it was so much fun. The teachers and the director set the tone. It was also easy to make new friends of all ages at AHA. I honestly can't think of one thing that was negative. The experience was magical, and I feel extremely lucky to have attended AHA. One day I hope to return!

Six months ago, I applied to Academia Hispano Americana, at the recommendation of a trusted international university colleague. I arrived in August 2022, with high expectations for faculty and students. After six weeks, I can testify that the faculty effectively support (and enable) student success, nimbly customizing an excellent curriculum. As for the students: well, I can honestly say that most interesting (and interested) people - from around the globe [some third (and more) Spanish language learners] - were in my level one and level two Spanish language cohorts.

Also, I did not fully appreciate the beauty of the campus from the AHA website photos. Faculty teach and students learn in buildings and gardens, rich in a vibrant blend of Spanish and Mexican influences. So the learning context is rich with culture and historic charm. Whether for a week or a month or six months, I recommend Academia Hispano Americana. I have flourished in six weeks: my Spanish is vastly improved now.

What a lovely place to engage in Spanish immersion classes. The setting is lovely and all of the teachers are excellent. Top notch instruction with wonderful camaraderie between staff and students, and students themselves. All ages and walks of life. I learned an unbelievable amount in 4 weeks of level 1 and will be back next spring for Level 2 and beyond. The director Jorge has a wonderful sense of humor. I definitely worked hard but it was also fun! Can’t say enough good things about the AHA experience.

I took an intermediate course for 2 weeks and my Spanish improved a remarkable amount. I can’t find the words to describe how wonderful Academia Hispano Americana is. Every teacher there is not only a good teacher, but a kind and interesting person. Jorge, who is the director, is lovely and patient with our language stumbles. I will go back next time I’m in San Miguel (which I hope is soon) and I’ll look forward to learning more Spanish, taking the Friday cooking classes, and drinking the unbelievably good cafe de olla.

Recently I took a 4-week beginner course at AHA and it was wonderful. As a beginner student my teacher, Javier, was patient and kind with me. He taught with a lovely mix of grammatical rules, vocabulary and conversational Spanish particular to Mexico. He was generous with his insights into life in SMA and provided many practical tips for improving my Spanish.

The school itself is lovely. Set in an older hacienda you are learning amidst a flower filled courtyard, and only steps away from central SMA.

The school registrar, Jorge Reyes was most helpful. Pre-trip he answered all my questions, and once I was in SMA he was very helpful with local recommendations, things to do, etc.

Every morning I was met with smiles, laughs and patience as I tried to learn a new language. AHA was wonderful. I would recommend it to anyone.

I spent the month of January 2020 at AHA in an intensive Spanish immersion program staying with a San Miguel family. It was a great experience. I had just retired and wanted to get a jump start on speaking Spanish as several of my grandchildren will be Spanish speaking. It was a marvelous experience and Jorge, the registrar, worked with each student to ensure that we were in the right class level. The weekend excursions organized through AHA were lots of fun as well as educational. Don’t forget to sign up for the Friday cooking classes.
