A real test of endurance due to very poor conditions underfoot. Of the 30 miles of trail we spent 20 plus miles of continuous mud which made it very tiring. The final day heading towards the Llangollen canal was through low level farmers fields with little waymarking and the path obliterated by mud aften above our boots. The canal towpath was completely submerged by water 12 inches deep with dangerous underwater obstructions for a stretch of 15 meters. This apparently has been a long standing problem with no attempt to put up signage warning of the closure.

Lots of mud! Reached the canal near Whitchurch with a feeling of relief only to find a section of the towpath is completely flooded and impassable! Water level over the top of my boots and no way round.

Disgusting muddy mess. Do not do this unless you enjoy swimming in mud and a feeling of abject misery. Do not recommend for anyone. At any age.

We did the trail over 3 days. Most of the trail in in good order but there are some overgrown sections (Stingers !!)
There are a few climbs and subsequent descents so stout boots are essential.
The only downside is the last part into Whitchurch, you have to go across seemingly endless fields before reaching the Willymore pub.

Walked long stretches of the trail while staying nearby. My grandparents used to live near Alderly Edge and the trail is a keen reminder of the terrain. Stunning views.

Walked a short part from Frodsham on a fine day in July 2022. The route up out of Frodsham is not very well signposted. My main criticism however is that once up on the ridge the view is hidden by the tall trees alongside the path. The trees have been cut down in a couple of places to give a view but mostly it is walking amongst trees. It might have been different in the winter.

We walked the trail over 3 days in mid November. Having never walked in this area before, we were somewhat sceptical as to what the terrain would be like. Would it be too flat and lacking the wow factor of some of the more well known trails? Thankfully we had a great few days and would highly recommend it for a short backpacking trip.
We caught the train to Frodsham which puts you directly at the start of the trail. After a pleasant walk up through the town, you soon gain the ridge and some great views over towards the industry that dominates the landscape towards the coast. Don’t let that put you off. It’s fascinating and you soon turn away from it to follow a lovely section of ridge that is never too demanding. The remainder of the day is dominated by Delamere Forest that is obviously popular with locals, but it never feels crowded and the end of the day saw us on quiet secluded paths before we dropped to our overnight stay at Willington Hall which is just off the path. This proved a great place to stop. Excellent real ale and good food at decent prices. Recommended.
Day 2 saw some uneventful walking to start but Beeston Castle soon comes into sight and this spurs you on. It was a fantastic sight looming of the mist. We had lunch at the canal crossing beneath the castle which was a lovely spot. The Castle was closed unfortunately but we made up for it at The Pheasant Inn which was well worth the detour. Great pub, log fires and ale and a friendly welcome despite the walking gear! Bulkeley Hill was a fitting climax to the day before descending to the Bickerton Poacher for our second night. Good solid accommodation.
Day 3 was the highlight. You climb back onto the ridge and the views for the first 6 miles are stunning. The trail does deteriorate slightly in quality as you cross lowlands and field edges towards the final push along the canal. There is one section near Robberhill where we were almost knee deep in bog. The canal section into Whitchurch was pleasant but it does seem to drag on and we were glad when we reached the lovely town of Whitchurch to finish. We stopped at the excellent Reubens Rooms. Some fantastic pubs in town and the best night of the trip.
Top Tips;
Long trousers are a must. It’s overgrown and nettlebound in parts. Gaiters also useful for day 3 fieldwork.
You do not pass any shops en route. We packed 3 days worth of packed lunches.
Don’t underestimate the canal section at the end. It’s lovely but drags.
Try and coincide day 2 with Beeston Castle opening times. Felt like we missed out.
Plan a night in Whitchurch to finish.
Both said we’d highly recommend it if you’re looking for a chilled few days away in an area that perhaps doesn’t automatically spring to mind.

Great walk - steep incline in parts. Dogs loved it! Kept dogs on lead when we were close to the sides or up high just incase. Beautiful view!

Completed the walk yesterday with my wife, doing it in four leisurely sections of 10,9,8 and 10 miles (inc detours) from Whitchurch to Frodsham during partial Covid lockdown.
On the whole, the route is very pleasant and varied and hardly any of it on roads.
It is generally well signposted except for the Frodsham end. There is a lack of signage in both directions from the centre of town to the Woodhouse Fort, and the apparent split of two route options is confusing. One should be signposted as an alternative route.
Best sections are around Bickerton - Beeston and Delamere - Frodsham.
The section from Whitchurch to Bickerton is low level, canal and fields.
In late summer, there are some overgrown stretches which are almost impassable if you are wearing shorts due to brambles and nettles, particularly Ash Wood near Tarporley. It looks like much investment has been made in new stiles, especially in the are to the South East of Kelsall. Some of the paths on Frodsham hill could be considered as dangerous as they are near to cliff edges.
On the whole we enjoyed the route and would recommend the trail to any keen walkers. The Pheasant Inn and the Boot Inn at Boothsdale are both worth the detours.

Hi we are doing the trail from Frodsham over 3 days this summer. Is there a secure car park in Frodsham to leave the car? We were intending to get the train back from Whitchurch to Frodsham to pick up the car.

Plenty of parking on the main street in Frodsham.

I am walking the Sandstone Trail next week - hopefully with my dog - but he is unable to negotiate stiles. Will this make it impossible for me to do the walk with him? I understand some of the stiles have been replaced with gates but I'm worried that we might get so far and have to retrace our steps and find an alternative route. Thanks in advance

Is that good for doing Sandstone Trail in April?
If i start from Frodsham to Whitchurch, how can I go back to get my car at Frodsham parking?

Thank you Chloe P
Do I have to book the train in advance? And How?

I want to access the sandstone trail but everything I look at revolves around having a car to reach the start of your walk. Not all of us have a car but would still like to walk but how can we reach places like this on foot. for example from Chester or Frodsham?

Has anybody done this walk over three days and stayed overnight en-route for two nights - if so, where did you stay each night. A lot of walkers doing it in 2 days stay at the Pheasant Hotel but I imagine this is roughly half way so am wondering if there is somewhere to stay a third of the way and two thirds of the way if doing it over 3 nights?

We have planned a 3 day walk - first day staying at Willington Hall hotel, after the first 11 miles, Bickerton Poacher Pub on day 2 afer next 11 and in Whitchurch at the end of the walk, there's plenty of choice in the town.
