Re-ignited my love for this show – but not in a good way.
TLDR: get the original CD on eBay – and save yourself a lot of disappointment.
I was never "in love" with the original - it was a fun show and had lots of great tunes, with a very clear story that really worked. I enjoyed it for what it was: a very well-crafted collaboration between Webber and Stilgoe (both very gifted people.)
So I didn't really think I had a lot of "skin in the game," when I went to the new version. Boy was I wrong. This new version is such a disappointment. Songs re-arranged and re-written by people with clearly less talent - why?? (Actually, I suspect I know the answer to that - see below).
Cluttered new lines replaced the originals and the major plot points adapted, but not improved. Less of an, "underdog wins through," story, it has now become… well to be honest, I'm not quite sure; perhaps a "we can all have fun playing trains, whoever we are," (I am enough, blah blah blah!) Rusty is relegated to a self-doubting nobody who needs to be "converted" to hydrogen to be a winner (you couldn't make it up! Clearly, steam engines are killing the planet!)
I don't often agree with folks who play the, "This has been wokified and it's terrible" card; that can often be just a lazy cop-out. But having seen the new version, I have a lot of sympathy with them for this new version of Starlight. It seems clear that well-intentioned people believed the story needed "re-imagining for a new generation." Unfortunately, these people just don't have the talent to untie Webber's and Stilgoe's shoelaces – and it shows.
Of course there are some great moments. It’s not all bad by a long way. It’s just so much…. LESS than the original. Perhaps people who’ve never seen/heard the original won’t mind; I’m happy (and sad) for them.
I used to think the original was "a pretty good, fun show." Turns it I was wrong; compared to today's fare, it was a masterpiece. It took me 30 years and a terrible new version to show me that - so that's one positive. I am now going to go online to a well know 2nd hand e-Market to buy a CD of the original production. There's more joy in that £4.95 (incl. P&P) than even my cheap ticket for the new version.

I have wanted to see this musical for years & was worried I might be disappointed when I finally saw it. I needn't have worried. The staging, skating, singing, music & performance was brilliant. My wife & I were blown away by the whole experience. We thoroughly recommend going to watch this immersive production, it is just wow.

The stage is a character in itself being the best parts of a Eurovision type stage (complete with pyrotechnics, moving light fixtures, smoke, giant screens and revolves. The technical skills of the actors are amazing. Costumes, everything was amazing. The show is loud but not uncomfortably so. Very much recommended. Oh and the food at the restaurant is superb and service excellent.

The show started with an amazing set and great skaters but very soon the ridiculously loud music started to make me feel ill. When super-bright beams of light started flashing directly into my eyes I became very unwell indeed. A member of staff helped me out into the foyer but the pumping music and flashing lights continued there and made me feel even worse. A member of staff saw my distress and brought me an eye mask and a pair of ear defenders which helped. I was told that the sound and lights were within health and safety limits but if that is the case why do they have a stock of industrial ear defenders and eye masks readily at hand???

AMAZING! The costumes we're absolutely breath taking. The singing was incredible. You could get an amazing view from anywhere in the theatre. The cast was fantastic and so talented. I absolutely loved it. Would highly recommend!!!

Amazing especially for children. My three children ages 10 to 5 absolutely loved it. As did I! We sat in one of the first class carriages and it was so fun!

Loved the show. Saw it as a child in the 80’s and tonight brought back lots of happy memories. Missed the carriage introduction song from the original but enjoyed everything else.
Wear thermals though as the air con was on full blast and it was freezing! Had to keep our jackets on!

The stage was clever and interesting. I thought at first that the view from our seats wouldn't be all that but I needn't have worried. We had the ramp to the left and the skaters came down the slope in front of us from left to right. The story was good. The cast/ skaters were amazing. This was the first time I'd seen the show. I loved it so much I bought the double album and the zoetrope album as well from the merch stall. One my friends who was there had seen it in the 80s and she loved last night performance too. I can highly recommend this show.

I have to give this one star as it is completely unacceptable that the music was so dangerously loud. I attended their evening performance with friends at Wembley Park on Saturday 25th January. We were sat in the stalls closest to the main arena/ stage. I noticed this at the time and my Apple Watch also warned me about the danger several times, but due to the health and safety requirements we were not allowed to leave sour seats. Since Saturday as a result of this I have been suffering with debilitating tinnitus, which makes me very upset and angry that this has happened, since this should be strictly monitored. Besides the risk to people’s short and long term hearing, I cannot understand why it needs to be so excessively loud as it actually makes listening to the show unpleasant.

Is first row of platform better than first row locomotive for the best view?

I visited last night and felt amazed by the seats we had, probably the cheapest but by far the best view, straight on full view of everything without having to crook your neck trying to see everything. Seats T24/25
