Nice large library, situated on the main road in shrewsbury, close to the rail station. Nice surroundings and has a couple of seats outside to sit and relax. Library is clean and tidy, and staff are polite. No self service machines that I could see, but who wants them anyway, when you can have a quick chat as you are getting served by the staff?
Plenty of seats in the library, and public computers available to use. There is a quiet seated/study area, where there was a guy asleep on a comfy looking leather chair!
Toilet was downstairs, and only one of them. There is a lovely old door right opposite the toilet, looks really old, and i had to take a photo of it! Lots of helpful brochures showing places of interest, and free maps of the town available to take, which we appreciated. Couldn't understand why these weren't available at Shrewsbury rail station too, as the map is essential to visitors! Maybe they'd run out.

never went inside the library as it was closed but the building is lovely and the statue of Darwin is nice too and the sculptured head of Mary Webb made it worth visiting

Situated behind the statue of Charles Darwin, Castle Gates Library is a beautiful old building which, at one time, was the home of Shrewsbury School, where Charles Darwin was educated. Certainly worth having a look at.

We visited Shrewsbury Library on a Saturday, situated in the centre of the town it is easy to get to. At the front of the building you are greeted by a statue of it's most famous student Charles Darwin and it is fantastic to walk around a place where one of history's most important figures was taught.

what a beautiful building - it is so historical but also a really ace library that has fiction, non fiction and audiobooks. Some parts of the building are 500 years old!! And the grafitti in the top floor oak panels is amazing. Completely steeped in history and still in daily use :)

I love Shrewsbury library it is such a wonderful building you feel part of Darwin past and yet it is fully modern and forging ahead to ensure the people of Shropshire have a great service that rivals any city.

I love this library - stunning building, an amazing range of books and the friendliest library staff I've ever met. It's not just about the books either, there so many events, it's a real community hub. One of my favourite places.
