We have one grandson (aged 3) who loves the sand and one grandson (aged 6) who adores being in the water, so we thought this place would be perfect for everyone.
We got there early (9.30am) and were the 3rd family on the beach so we could pick our spot. It quickly started filling up.
The weather was great and both boys were in their element. The water was quite cold but still enjoyable and one family even caught a fish!!
Cafes, shops and toilets not far away so all in all a good day.
The only thing stopping me giving a 5 * review was the fact that I found a used syringe at the bottom of the entry steps!!!

Found marina lake and causeway in Weston supermarket as my grandaughter wanted to play in water.nice little area with sandy beach and water is safe to go in.no sinking sand here.just be cautious as sand is black in the water.we had a little boat to paddle around in it and had a lovely time there.get there early on a nice day as it gets very busy.

This is a lovely little part of Weston seafront. Knightstone Island was the location for Weston’s first purpose-built seawater baths. A public pavilion, theatre, and swimming baths were added in the early 20th century. it was underused for many years and when I used to visit as a child, I don’t remember much about it. The buildings were then revived in 2007 with the whole island being redeveloped primarily as flats and offices.

As noted on their website “Marine Lake is nearly 100 years old, it was originally equipped with a diving stage, rafts, rubber boats, water chutes, and children’s paddle boats. There were hundreds of bathing tents and dressing enclosures to protect bathers’ modesty. When it opened the lake was an instant success, being used by more than a quarter of a million people during 1929.

It still offers a safe and clean method to swim whilst visiting Weston seafront. At its deepest point it is about 15 metres deep but it varies according to the tidal height. Occasionally the whole Lake will go underwater. If you look carefully at the sea walls along the lower walkway you can see the height markings.”

I still get an odd bolt of happiness going across the walkway. For some bizarre reason it always takes me back to RE at school and the story of Moses parting the sea.

A fascinating seawater lake right at the end of weston.
Lovely place to swim and admire the architecture of Weston.
You can swim or paddle board and there is a clean beach for kids .

I love Marine Lake Beach, its great fun for kids to play on the sand and dip in the sea, it's what attracts us to Weston-super-Mare, I really hope it can remain safe and available for families

Similar expierence to another review due to the mud. The area looks a lot better after the clean up and I was looking forward to an early morning swim. Parked nearby in Melrose car park which is a short walk away. Unfortunately the transition from beach to swimming depth is impossible to walk out. By knee water depth the sand suddenly changed to very soft mud and i found it ifficult to get up out of it. My daughter was so scared by this expierence that she returned to the beach to sit down. For swimming I found it easier to go to the very far side next to the walkway and enter by the metal steps. The depth here allowed me to swim from the concrete basin around the edge.

I would say that the lake is great for those who want to paddle board or swim from the far side. The transition from beach to mud is actually quite dangerous and children should definitely be supervised very closely. I found the main beach at high tide safer for families

Dredging work at the Marine Lake was completed in June 2022 to allow it to open to holidaymakers for the summer. The whole lake area has been tidied up with additional steps down into the water provided at a couple of locations.
Weston-super-Mare Marine Lake Mudlarks are a voluntary group who are helping to keep the area clean and tidy.
The Lake certainly lookes better thsan it has for some years, on a couple of our Weston seafront walks across the causeway and around the lake we noticed a number of folk swimming, and some paddleboarders on the water.

I have been so looking forward to this excellent venue being dredged and was really looking forward to getting into a mud free lake on the jubilee weekend, sadly it wasn’t the experience I had hoped for, great once you get out into the deeper water however the transition between beach and deep enough water to swim in is very very muddy and I had a job to walk in it as the mud was up to my knees and had strong suction, I could only escape it by swimming and then my stomach was right on the mud, so disappointing and I wouldn’t want to risk children being unintended, the depth is very variable as well, not gently shelving as it should be.

I will next enter the water using the new steps situated on northern shore of the lake.

Please be warned especially if you have young children. Hopefully this will be resolved at some point before someone gets stuck and forces closure again, a great job sadly unfinished.

It seems to be taking a long time, but with 30,000 tonnes of silt to be removed, it's not surprising. Shame the beach and walkway are closed, too, but safety first is the motto. Apparently the Council are spending £300,000 on this job alone. And £700,000 on the total Weston, Clevedon and Portishead works to the respective seafronts. Still, it'll be nice when it's all finished. I enjoyed my walk along Madeira Cove today, in any case and there are many memorial benches if you feel like a rest along the way.
