Something slightly eerie about this place and very atmospheric. Often your the only person there and the windswept hill top fort and it will blow you away. Ramparts still very easy to define and still difficult to climb/storm. Worth a visit for an hour or so even if just for the extensive view across the channel and north to the hills

I went there and saw the work done by professor Ray Howells. His book is invaluable about how are ancestors fought the Romans for 120 years, thrilling.

Really enjoyed the walk and was fascinated to see the Roman remains. The explanatory boards made the walk interesting but next time I would take an experienced guide for a fuller explanation. Would definitely revisit.

At the top of lodge hill and veer to the left you'll find a public footpath with the occasional horse! The walk itself is short through woodland with occasional views over Caerleon. You can still imagine the fort with its steep enhancements, in its prime the seat of kings and never really excavated. It's a spiritual place and hardly known even by the locals. There is a longer walk across the entire ridge. Worth a walk and suitable with dogs on a lead.

An Roman settlement laid out on the ground, you can see the out line of barracks and display boards give information to explain the scene in front of you.

A very exciting place of history but I would definitely recommend, or insist, that you be taken on a tour of it by an expert to grasp the full magnitude of it. There is no interpretation on the site and so you can be flying blind up there. Beautiful setting to take you back to an inspiring time where the Silures fought off the Romans. A firm favourite for history geeks who love military strategy.

Gave children a chance to run around while we read all about it and walked around the ruins. Ideal place for a picnic. Lots of places to eat in town

Caerleon is famous for its Roman fortress, baths and amphitheatre, but this hill fort is just as impressive, if a little less obvious. Thought to date from 600BC (before the Romans), it was occupied by the Silures tribe who resisted the Romans before eventually doing a deal with them to co-exist. (Thus demonstrating a talent for pragmatism and compromise that has re-emerged at various times in Welsh history.)
The site is sadly overgrown with many trees, ferns and bramble, but there is a well-defined path leading into it from the top of Lodge Hill. As we walked the path, we gradually realised that the levels, banks and ditches around us were not natural but man-made, and the impressive extent of it dawned on us. The central enclosure, at the western end, was relatively clear, and we scrambled up the banks to the top. We'll visit again in the winter months, when the lack of leaves would give better views.
The fort is in a state of charming neglect; we couldn't help but imagine our iron age ancestors walking in our foot-steps. We're hoping the site will be cleared in years to come, so a bit less imagination is needed to take it all in...
This site is also suitable for families, but not for wheelchair access. Wear sturdy shoes, but walking boots are not required. A quick visit can be had in 30 mins or so, but you could easily spend longer trying to trace the hidden structure of the outer fort. There's not really much to photograph, but where you can peek through the tree cover, you can get some decent views across Newport and the Bristol Channel.
