We visited for the jazz afternoon. Weather was wonderful. Jazz was excellent. The nature reserve is tranquil and beautiful. Dragonflies were flying over the lakes and there were families of Swans. A lovely place to get away from it all. We loved walking round the wild areas BUT please, Lower Bruckland Farm, get RID of those dreaded Buddleia Davidii that you have actually PLANTED. These plants originate in China and are causing big problems in the UK countryside as they are choking our lovely native plants and taking over. Network Rail has a particular problem with this plant as it grows all along railway tracks where we should have Hawthorn and Elder for example. As soon as Buddleia goes to seed, it will spring up everywhere on the farm and you will regret ever planting it. Yes, butterflies love it and that's where people get fooled into thinking they are great plants. They are actually a pest. Other than that, everything's brilliant.

We really enjoyed our trip to the nature reserve. We were staying locally, and arrived shortly after it opened and had the whole place to ourselves for most of our visit.
We and our young children (<2) loved the pretty lakes and gardens, abundant wildlife, quirky sculptures and wooden structures. Having young children, we don't walk very fast and found it easy to spend a couple of hours weaving our way around the grassy paths that surround the lakes.
Being manmade, the place has a somewhat sculpted feel to it. This certainly isn't a wilderness - it's more like a very large and slightly eccentrically put together garden with plenty of interesting wildlife.
Overall, we thought it was well worth the £4.50 we paid to visit.
To be fair, we wouldn't recommend this place to everyone. If you're looking for somewhere for an extended hike, this is probably too small. And if you want to walk with your dog, clearly this isn't the place for you either. It's disappointing that some people write such negative reviews of a family business based on the fact that they've not done any research before visiting.
Anyway, if you fancy an hour or two's ambling in pretty and accessible surroundings, with lots to see for curious younger children, then this place is perfect.

The previous review really confuses me?! We live locally and have been meaning to visit Lower Bruckland for a while. Today was the day! We followed the (very obvious) brown tourist signs from the A3052 and kept driving down the lane until we found it. Lovely ice cream, a chat with Jo (the lady in the cafe) and off we went to explore. The reserve is so much more than "one lake" and there are maps near the entrance showing you this. A beautiful, peaceful place with plenty of wildlife and interesting sculptures to enjoy. We'll certainly be going back!

Think we must be invisible! Walked into the tearoom, lady behind the counter was chatting with the only other people in there. So we had a little wander around and kept looking over, but completely blanked. No " I'll be with you in a minute" or "please take a seat and I'll be with you shortly" etc.
Left the tearoom to walk around the lake and on leaving the tearoom garden you hit a large gate saying £4.50 per person entry. For a small lake! Go to Seaton wetlands - free and far bigger / better.
The supposed signage from the main A3052 is non existent too. Just as well, my tip give it a miss.

Should have gone to Specsavers, you missed the brown tourist sign on the A3052 at the end of Bruckland Lane, and missed the large map in the car park showing the area of the nature reserve namely 21 acres, 4 large lakes, 3 smaller ponds, sculptures, woodland and wildlife.

If you are looking for a few hours escape from all the hustle and bustle then this is the place to visit. Free car park takes you into the small wooden shop / cafe area where a very friendly lady greeted us. Inside are a few tables, some lovely cakes, and drinks. Outside is a lovely seating area looking across the lake and in full sunshine. A great spot to just relax.
Its £4.50 to get in which is fine given its a family run reserve, made by the people who run the place now, and who have put a lot of hard work and effort into making it what it is today. The walks are all on grass and take you off in all directions, around the various lakes and ponds , with wooden benches to just sit and enjoy watching the swans and ducks, while listening to the bird song around you.
Its not a huge place, but large enough to spend a few hours perhaps with a picnic. On the way back to the entrance we stopped and had a drink sat outside the cafe area in the sunshine. The owner spoke to us for a while about how the dug out the ponds and the vision they had for the reserve which has now come into fruition.
We had a lovely afternoon here and felt very "chilled out" on the way back home. Will definitely visit again in the future.
By the way, you can go into the cafe and sit outside with a drink or cake for free without having to pay an admission fee - this in itself is worth doing just for the tranquility of the place.

Absolutely fantastic. This really is such a delightful venue. This comprises of a series of lakes, ponds, and marshland which have been very well designed allowing easy access to view the very varied flora and fauna, all within an area of outstanding natural beauty. Alongside one of the lakes adjacent to a small car park is the cafe area, and alongside this there facilities for hosting various functions with a small bar and barbeque.
We walked around the nature reserve before having a lakeside cream tea in the cafe, which was the best we had in years.
We cannot understand the criticism of not allowing dogs on the nature reserve, the wildlife is truly wild, and therefore easily disturbed, we took our dogs for a lovely walk on one of the many public footpaths prior to entering the reserve, which gave us the opportunity to admire the area from the overlooking hills.
Some people are totally oblivious to the distress caused by the mere presence of dogs in the vicinity of wild animals / birds and their young, and as some are so heavily protected by law, the owners would be morally if not legally obliged to take responsibility in assuring that there welfare is paramount.

Went there on a very hot day, hoping to walk the dog and have a picnic.
However when I got there they had signs up saying no dogs allowed....this was confirmed by a rather unfriendly lady in the cafe who said dogs were not allowed even on a lead. As it was hot I could not possibly leave my dog in the car so has wasted my time going there. The lady offered no sympathy for my wasted trip and did not even bother to stand up. Clearly they don't like dogs or dog owners...so don't go here if you are either. Finally this is not a free nature reserve. You have to pay. About £5 I think it was. All in all I was upset by my visit, so wouldn't recommend it unless you don't like dogs and don't mind paying to go for a pretty walk..

Hi evergreen295
Sorry to hear you didn't enjoy your visit. We do state on the website on the "visit us" page that "in the interests of not upsetting the wildlife, dogs are not permitted". Apologies for any misunderstanding.
Something the website doesn't state is that in addition to our visitors from the animal world, we are also visited by schools and nursing homes, another reason that the presence of dogs runs somewhat counter to the environment we are trying to cultivate.
It's also worth mentioning that we are dog owners ourselves! I hope this proves to you that the "no dogs" policy comes from a point of concern for our other visitors rather than a dislike of dogs or their owners :)
Finally, regarding your point around the cost of visiting: for the last 17 years, Lower Bruckland has been a privately funded nature reserve, with no support in the form of grants from any council, fund or otherwise. We charge for entry so that we are able to keep developing the site, and we hope that the tranquil and unique surroundings are worth the fee.
All the best

We visited here a few years ago and loved the peace, good food and beautiful views.
Passing by last week, we drove in, expecting the usual warm welcome and equally warm home-made cheese scones.
The first disappointment was that we are no longer allowed to take the dog in, then we discovered that the café was under new management.
Waiting to order tea, I was amazed to hear the woman behind the counter telling a customer how horrid the general public are! Vehemently and at length. What a welcome for a complete stranger.
Not wishing to be deemed horrible too, we did partake of our pot of tea, then left quickly, never to return.
Perhaps she was just having a bad day...........
