This beautiful building is found nestled in the heart of Newbridge community. Like many of the people who live in the Valleys I have a strong connection to its heritage. This is because the Institute building which opened in 1908 is a lasting monument to the miners who worked so hard to build it, (like my great grandad and many more of my family).
The Memorial Hall built in 1924 also serves as a memorial to the local servicemen who lost their lives during WWI. Many locals like myself can often (sadly find), more than one of their relatives on the memorial plaque.
Not only this, it's beautiful art deco auditorium and ballroom, was a place people such as my grandparents came to dance and have fun. It holds many memories and often many love stories too.
Through the years its had huge music events, where people from miles around came to visit. My dad once watched Iron Maiden, Tommy Emmanual and Manic Street Preachers here. There have been thousands of bands throughout the years including,Dire Straights, The stranglers, The Cars, Motorhead, Whitesnake, Shakin Stephens and Marillion.
It's also been a popular film location because of its unique charm. Things such as Dr Who, Sherlock Holmes and many more.
Prince Charles opened the rennervated building back up and inside looks clean and modern but has still kept its Art Decor and original charm.
After the hit of Covid many people are unaware that the Memo is back up and running! There are meeting rooms and function rooms; they host a wide range of events including weddings, live music events, concerts, classes, parties, wakes, conferences and meetings. It's got a great welcoming vibe for people of all ages. A great place to visit!
