I visited the island as part of a boat trip. Wanted to check out accommodations for a vacation stay. The two resorts were closed and abandoned. There is a nice sand bank for good fotos but that’s about it for tourists.

Trip fron Naval port one hour across 50 php each. Ask for Rey from Eworts lodge real friendly guy he will look after you. No power until 530 pm and go's off at 1030 so I recommend to hire the generated for the night so at least you have a fan at night 360 php. Rey gets his live band going and his wife is a great cook.

Our boatmen insisted on visiting this sandbar, and we soon found out why. We arrived around 4pm and it was a great place to take pictures and snorkel.

Famous for its shifting sand bar, I am very happy to have been in this place. Its perfect for some quiet time listening to the subtle waves and looking at the ocean. The water was clear and cool. Early morning and late afternoon is perfect for swimming. The shifting white sand is picture perfect! There are boats for rent that will tour you around the island. Rock formations, luscious green scenery and deep blue ocean are some of the beautiful things you can enjoy during the tour. There are rooms where you can stay for a night or more and the locals are very friendly and accommodating. You'll never regret going there!

Going to Higatangan Island is logistically challenging. Upon arrival at the Tacloban Airport, one must ride a jeepney going "downtown". Afterwards, a van ride going to Naval, Biliran (travel time would be 2-3 hours). In Naval, one must catch the local boat ride bound to Higatangan Island that departs at 12 noon. Travel time would be 45 mins to one hour.

When we catched the boat ride, there are only 2 pairs of tourist going to the said island, maybe going there at weekdays make it possible for us to enjoy the beach with almost ourselves only.

When we arrived at the island, it really has a "remote" feel in it. There are only few lodging options here and we opt to stay at a nipa hut beach front. Electricity in the island only run for a limited time, luckily the ones we stayed in utilizes solar energy so the electricity is not a problem for all our gadgets and comfortwise.

( Try to haggle with the rates, the hut was initially offered to us at 1k but we ended up getting it for 600, but kudos to the caretakers of the nipahuts... they are very accomodating and helpful )

Regarding with the beach, the sandbar is not as amazing as I was expecting it... It is not maintained, there are trashes in the area that makes it feel dirty. Issues aside, the water is very clear and good for swimming.

This is perfect for those who want to have a quiet time and enjoy the company of your friends or reading a good old book by yourself.

HIGATANGAN ISLAND, BILIRAN is a BEAUTIFUL PARADISE
Hello! Higatangan Island is a beautiful place. However, just like any newly discovered destinations here in the region there are a few imperfection that this place needs to really work on. I won't let our minor stress ruin your appetite in visiting the place because I assure you it's all WORTH it. There are a lot of exciting and fun activities waiting for you aside from it's pristine white sand beach and unique rock formations you can also try trekking, bird/bat watching, and a whole lot of activities depending on what your resort can offer, for us we had kayaking with a very minimal fee of 200 php for 2 hours. For our dinner we got fresh sea shells and pork chop and during beer time a fisherman sold his fresh catch for super low price. For the first time I was able to experience fresh avalon. However here are a few tips to save you money and stress ☺
1. Make sure you have a reservation before sailing. Walk in guest is a bad idea unless you have a tent with you and enough food and beverage-COOL. Don't forget the ICE.
2. Make sure that you have a note of all agreements during the reservation. Remind your agent/supplier upon arrival but still bring extra cash.
3. I personally prefer that you rent a boat instead of their commuter type boat because they are not following the allowed maximum passenger. Don't worry according to the locals there has been no report of accidents related to it. If you are adventurous you can try but if you still love your life with a group of 12-20 renting a boat is not a luxury.
4. There is no hospital (only health center) in the island. I'm sure you know what to do.
5. Buy and bring what you can if you want to save money. But if you want to save yourselves from stress-FORGET #5.
6. Electricity source are gen-set bring solar powered mobile phone chargers as electricity is only turned on from 6:00 pm until 11:00 am.
7. Bring enough drinking water.
8. Last but not the least, if by any unfortunate chance you get to ride the commuter boat be watchful of the number of passengers coming in. Its best to stay in front so you have a rough estimate. You may hear some locals say "tourist should go find some boat to rent" and insist on over loading the boat. Even if you got there ahead of them you may just want to follow as we did. Save yourself from stress.

Higatangan Island is reached by a 45 minute bangka ride from Naval, Biliran that costs a bargain basement 50 pesos. The bangka normaly departs at 1100: some days there are two. The Philippines Coastguard attends to make sure that it is not overloaded. You will be sharing with some cases of bottled San Miguel Pale Pilsen, Pepsi and Coke among many other goods. My crossing over was in extremely calm seas while coming back it was windy and wild, with the bangka being challenging to board and disembark from (both involving wading through choppy waters).

The island has a beautiful white sand sandbar from which the bangkas to and from Naval arrive and depart.

I stayed at Emponet Barton Beach Resort which had three cottages (all attached to one another, so more like motel units) finished and another five under construction. It was a most enjoyable little place to stay and easy on the wallet. I took a P400 hour plus long boatride around the island: the boatmen had very limited English but I still managed to see a bit of coral.

A visit to this island is highly recommended. It's the real (white sand beach) Philippines, a million miles from Metro Manila!
