This was an unforgettable experience! I booked a private tour with a festive Christmas eve dinner. Accompanied by Lester Nanan one of the world's foremost bird experts. We encountered an incredible variety of wildlife, including tree boas, silky anteaters, and an array of birds such as kingfishers, herons, and flamingos. However, all of that paled in comparison to the breathtaking sight of thousands of Scarlet Ibis coming in to roost at dusk. Each bird returns to its designated spot nightly, transforming the hilly island into a stunning display of scarlet dots. With rum punch in hand and a delicious hot meal to savor, this truly was the experience of a lifetime. Dont forget to ask Lester about his family their history and part in the protection and preservation of this unique place.

We are staying on Tobago for 2 weeks and before we came we saw the BBC Wild Caribbean program about Caroni - Lester Nanan's heartfelt commentary on this program inspired us to book a flight and travel to Trinidad for the day so we could experience the wonders of Caroni for ourselves and boy were we not disappointed! It is a magical place, so serene gliding through the water finding birds and animals we would not have realised we're even there without a guide - masked cardinals, screech owl, ani, a flock of over 100 wild flamingoes and hundreds of scarlet ibis flying in to roost, to name just a few - a truly magical experience and one which should be right at the top of everyone's must see bucket list - we were lucky enough to have Lester as our guide and we can't thank him enough for such an amazing and truly unforgetable time. Thank you also to Fraser and his American tour group whose boat we joined - sipping rum punch in such esteemed company was a beautiful end to an amazing day in Trinidad.

Having grown up in T&T, we had never actually done this tour. Now visiting with family, it was a wonderful experience. Our guide Ali was knowledgeable and entertaining. As luck would have it, we had our own boat which added to the experience. I'd highly recommend this to anyone visiting T&T.

The entire tour from start to finish was amazing! Our tour guide Aiden was very knowledgeable and explained all parts of the water and animal life. The Scarlett ibis is one of the most breathtaking birds I’ve ever seen. Definitely recommend this tour!

With Lester as our guide we enjoyed an amazing trip through the swamps and to the spectacular view point to watch the scarlet ibis come home to roost. Lester was amazing at spotting the birds and wildlife. We saw all three varieties of kingfisher, blue heron, masked cardinal, tropical screech owls, yellow oreole and the 2 boas. We would highly recommend Lester, his company and tours. Thank you so very much.

This was a last minute decision for us as part of a day trip to Trinidad (staying in Tobago).
We were not sure what to expect but it was absolutely brilliant, a definite trip to take if you can.
A flat bottom boat slowly motored up the channel & through the mangroves with a very knowledgeable guide. He pointed out snakes hanging on branches, tiny crabs, little owls and many other birds, our guide also explained the different types of plants & their uses.
At sunset we were stationery to watch the 1000's of scarlett ibis roost in the trees as well as large white herons.
Highly recommended trip, take a camera, we only had phones which don't do the tour justice .

Amazing boat ride thru a mangrove swamp to see more than 10,000 Scarlet Ibis land on an island at sunset! Many other species too.
Nanan is from a well known family of environmental saviors in Trinidad. They are long associated with Asa Wright Foundation and luxury ecolodge! Book both, you won’t be disappointed!

This was an amazing experience! We booked a private tour with dinner and had the boat to ourselves with the boss, Lester Nanan, who is one of the leading bird experts in the world. We saw a variety of wildlife including tree boas, silky anteaters and a variety of birds including a tropical screech owl and flamingoes, but that pailed into insignificance when an estimated 16000 Scarlet ibis come in to roost at dusk. Each bird has a designated spot and uses it every night, and the hilly island they land on becomes a mass of scarlet dots. Washed down by rum punch and a lovely hot meal, this was the experience of a lifetime

Hi, Is it easy to board and disembark the boat?
Escrita el 8 de agosto de 2022
Yes, it was fairly easy. They have several boats but I think they are all pretty similar. We did have to step off the dock down into the boat but staff was there to assist boarding and disembarking.

Good day
The cost of the boat tour is just $10 usd per person.
If you require transportation to and from the Winston Nanan Caroni Bird Sanctuary, there is an additional cost for that.
Reservations are required.
