This is a one-of-a-kind place to visit. I have never seen a mudhouse before, and it was interesting to hear about the history of a family of Asian/Trinidad culture. The personal touch of the hospitality was much appreciated.
Note, phone well in advance to make sure the time/day works for them, and also beware of Google Maps as it seems to be wrong by about a mile!

Completely independently run and operated, because the government refuses to provide assistance to this specific attraction. Family does a great job at educating and keeping the place together. A great activity for tourists and trinis from all parts of the country.

The family very kindly waited for us as we were running late. Andrea was an excellent guide with a great sense of humour! It was very intersting hearing about this once thriving coco estate. They is a coco hut and mud house with artefacts depicting lifestyle - some chullas used in cooking, farm equipment etc. The coco hut is used for glamping and what a super place.
I feel this place is really worth a visit, so much history remains.

The Mud House was built in 1885. The Museum itself was established in 2018 to keep our legacy alive. The property was donated by Professor Dr. Irene Koch-Chattoor. The curator is Mrs. Rajwantee Bullock, also author From the Mud House to the University. The Museum is located in 176 Siparia Old Road, Avocat, Fyzabad, Trinidad, West Indies. It is open to nationals and internationals. It is dedicated to the lives of our ancestors. It is a realistic interactive museum. Many events are hosted at the museum. The museum is in alignment with agriculture and the restoration of a coffee and cocoa estate.

We learned about this museum by accident and were able to arrange a tour at short notice. The site features artifacts and other displays of the tools and articles used by indentured laborers who arrived from India more than four centuries ago. The main feature is an actual mud house so called because of the mixture of dirt and cow’s dung that created a floor and wall covering called “gobar.” The tour began with a video of the background to the mud house and facts about cocoa that was a major crop in the plantations in which the early settlers worked. It also includes a cocoa house that was used to dry the cocoa beans. Behind the house is an orchard of fruits and vegetables used by the immigrants. Our group of young children, adults and seniors enjoyed all aspects of the relatively recent attraction. We highly recommend this historical site.
