Kondoa Rock art sites are situated on a very big areal. Before visit , one need to go to Kolo (Road Arusha-Dodoma). Coming from the north, the office is on the left side of the road. One need to pay for the visit, and a guide of them goes with the visitors. You need to have your own transportation.
We had a female guide, she was very interesting about he Rock Art. There is one walk they do, one can visit on this walk the 3 places, or only 1. There is a lot of information about the rock art and paintings.

The Kondoa Rock-Art sites are well worth a visit if you are interested in these kind of things. The paintings are spread over a large area, so you’ll need a driver and a guide. After many problems with another guide (see below), we organised a guide and a driver from the museum in Kolo (see photo) when we got to Kondoa. We got a very good female guide with a lot of historical knowledge – the tour was very interesting! While we were doing the tour, the guide’s colleagues organized bus tickets to Dodoma for us. The communication with the people working at the museum was great, and the prize was also very fair.
Warning: Do NOT book the guide Moshi Changai. Before we booked our official guide from the museum, we had many problem with the guide Moshi Changai, whom we found online. When we met him in Kondoa, he was acting very unpolite, He was rude and angry towards us, it was very unconfortable and scary. When we therefore canceled the trip with him, he became really angry and started threathening us. This was a really terrible situation. Be careful when you book your guides.

The Kondoa Rock Art is amazing.
As the paintings are spread out and very remote areas, you will need a guide.
(Please read to the end, I have a warning and a recommendation! )
This proved problematic for us: we found the guide Mr. MOSHI CHANGAI online. He offered us a tour and it should cost $340, we were supposed to pay $140 in advance, which we did even though we never received any sort of contract, we simply trusted it would be fine. When we arrived, Moshi Changai had “forgotten” about our arrival despite having paid. We were supposed to be picked up near Manyara and get a transport to Kondoa with Moshi, but nobody came as he had forgotten about us, and we were left alone in the dark in a bus stop in Tanzania, pretty scary… so we had to pay a very expensive last-minute taxi for 200 dollars to Kondoa ourselves. We decided not to do the trip with the unreliable MOSHI CHANGAI despite having already paid 140 dollars. Unfortunately, Moshi turned up at our Hotel and threatened us, we should pay the rest.
He was a very aggressive Muslim man full of drugs and threatened us verbally a lot. At the end, we were so scared that we hid in our room, we were afraid of him. But he was waiting for us again the next day, shouting and shouting, threatening us with the police, he insisted we needed to pay even though we didn’t do the tour with him, he just wanted our money. It was so horrible. People in the hotel told us the police was his brother, so then we were scared and paid $340 to this man, who offered us nothing but a lot of pain and verbal abuse. I most strongly warn everybody of this unreliable scammer.
We still didn’t want to give up and we really wanted to see the rock art, so we found another recommendation of
Mr Amon Mgimwa. He works for the government and is an official employer for the rock art. He offered us a wonderful tour with a cultural heritage expert from University which was a very charming lady. Amon also organised a bus for us to Dodoma and was so helpful.
We were shocked to find out that the tour with him just cost a third of what Moshi wanted: we paid only a hundred dollar including bus tickets to dodoma - instead of 340.
Takes extra money for himself, it’s much cheaper if you book directly with Amon from the Rock Art site.
Much cheaper and better!!!

One of the most enjoyable and rewarding trips that I have had for many years. Cultural tourism definitely has a fresh feeling after all those safari game parks that copy one another and fail to be original or else so expensive that they become prohibitive
I linked up with Moshi Changan and he made all the arrangements and provided a local expert for a guided tour. He also arranged a tour of the village and traditional meal, sitting on an mkeka, with a family in their home with a detailed description of the menu based on locally grown produce - so much more rewarding than a safari park buffet

The Kondoa Rock art sites are a bit off the normal tourist trail. These sites are approximately midway between Dodoma and Arusha. As we had read about these world Heritage sites and really wanted to see them, we took a flight from DAR to Dodoma and then drove from Dodoma to Arusha.
The tourist information office at the site is quite pathetic with little or no information. There was a lady there who introduced herself as the guide and quoted a hefty fee, which we settled at half her quote after some vigorous bargaining.
The actual sites are about Kms inside (off the main road along which this office is situated). So, yes, you do need a guide to take you there!
Then there is a good climb to reach the Kolo B2,B3 and B1 sites. The climb can be pretty steep but the views from the top are worth it.
And then, of course, we have the actual rock art. It is incredible that the people made this art more than 10,000 years back and they are preserved till today. Apparently these used a mix of animal blood, animal urine and plants to creat the ochre dye in which these drawings are made.
Another incredible thing is that there is no protection of any sort by way of any fence or railing or anything. You could actually touch them (we did not- and one should not). In spite of such free access, we could not see one bit of graffitti anywhere! Hats off to the people of Kondia and Tanzania for preserving these so well.
If you are interested in history and culture, then this place is absolutely worth a visit

The Kondoa rock art is definitely worth seeing if you want to get off the beaten track in Tanzania. Moshi Changai, contact information below, can organize everything for you so it's easy and affordable. We contacted Moshi and he organized everything for us. We were coming from a Safari on Serengeti and ngorongoro so Moshi booked us a direct bus from arusha and our Safari guide took us to Makayuni on the Arusha Kondoa road and waited for the bus with us to make sure we got the right one. The bus was a large, 4 seats across, comfortable bus. It took about 3 hours and stopped once for a washroom and snack break. The road was good, paved all the way. When we got to Kondoa, Juma, who works with Moshi, met us and took us to the Kondoa climax hotel annex for 2 nights. The hotel room was clean with an attached washroom, but very basic. Moshi and Juma arranged meals for us at local restaurants that were very tasty and vegetarian for our entire stay. The next day juma met us with a driver and took us first to the kolo museum to learn about the site and get a permit. Then we went to the Pahe site which is about 600 years old. It is a fairly easy 30 minute walk. Next they drove us to the B1, B2 and B3 sites. Juma was very knowledgeable and explained the paintings and their significance. This was about a 90 minute walk, but they have just recently made a path of rock and cement for the entire circuit so the path is very stable and less difficult. Although it should be noted that the path is not smooth and there are no hand rails in the sections with steps. After that they took us to another local restaurant for lunch. Juma even introduced us to his family. The next day Moshi organized tickets for us on the direct bus to Iringa (paved road all the way) because we were going to Ruaha national park, but you could also get a direct bus back to Arusha. The rock paintings are interesting and worth seeing, but we also enjoyed the very different experience of staying in a small town with no tourists and eating at some local restaurants and meeting some of the people. It was very different than the Serengeti and much cheaper.

In october 2019 we visited kondoa coming from katesh were we climbed mount hanang. We were welcomed really warmly by Amon who picked us up at the bus stand and gave as a great tour of two beautiful rock painting sites around kondoa - namely the kolo (B1, B2, B3) and pahi paintings. With an earlier arrival or an extra day it‘s also possible to visit the fengua and thawi sites, which are supposed to be pretty nice as well.
Our tour included food, guiding and accomodation. Though the best part of the trip was our guide Amon ( +255767127315, +255713127315) who knows a lot about the historical sites and took great effort to make everybody enjoy the trip.

Having read articles about this site, we were anxious to see it, especially the drawing of the woman being kidnapped by men (as interpreted by Mary Leakey). We visited B1, B2 only in August 2019 and were impressed with the drawings but dismayed to see the drawings were faded and obscured . It is exposed to the elements and the local villages still use the sites for ceremonial purposes. No one really knows how old the art is, but if you are into indigenous culture and its origins, these sites tell a story about the early civilization. Unfortunately, we did not have a good guide who we hired at the Kolo town office, who did not attempt to tell us about the background and stories behind the drawings, but only point out the figures and provide explanations of what the figures were (since they were hard to discern due to fading and deterioration). So, if you are into rock art, I strongly suggest you read up about it before making the climb up the rocks.
Before undertaking the trip to Kondoa rocks, I asked on the Tanzania Forum about how strenuous the climb was, since the reviews on this site didn't provide much information. I didn't get very helpful information so I will share my experiences for those who are interested in going to the Rocks. Sites B1-3 are the most popular and accessible, so we selected that site.
We started off from Tarangire Park and the road was paved all the way, in relatively good condition but with speed bumps to slow the traffic, as well as many police checks. The road is heavily used by large trucks with heavy loads and it is winding in parts as well as hilly. We went on Sunday so the traffic was lighter than the work week, but with more human pedestrians crossing the road, as well as cattle/goats/donkey herds crossing. It took about 2.5 hours to arrive at Kolo. There are petrol stations along the way with toilets. The small town of Kolo is the government office for access to the Rocks and where we paid the entrance fee (27000 tsh per adult tourist) and hired a guide (30,000 tsh). It has a squat toilet. The guide jumped in our jeep and we drove on paved, then dirt road to the entrance to the site -- about 20 min. From the entrance to the site, we drove into the conservation area on a very rough, rocky steep road for about 30 minutes to the base of the rock area. You will need a very sturdy 4wd for this trip. The rocks are more than 4000 ft elevation. From the base where you park the jeep, the signs inform that the climb to see B1-3 takes 90 minutes. If you are young and fit, that may be true.
I am a 69 yo overweight female who works out with a trainer 3x week. I had difficulty climbing over the steep rocks but I made it safely with help from our tour guide and husband. We started for the easiest site, B2, and took about 30 minutes to climb up. Then our local guide pointed to B1 much farther up the hillside. B1 was the site I really wanted to see with the drawing of the kidnapped woman. It looked daunting and I was already winded from the climb to B2. We pushed ahead to B1. It was very strenuous, but not that far. It took about 30 minutes. The climb down was much faster, and we decided not to climb up to B3. The total time was about 90 minutes. Bring water and some food (like an energy bar). The climb goes through thick bushes and small trees, but we saw no mosquitos or flies, a few bees, though.
We drove back to Kolo and dropped off our local guide. If you get an early start, around 8am, and limit yourself to B1-3 sites, this can be done on a day trip, returning to the Tarangire area around 5pm, and maybe pushing on to Arusha for another 2 hours.
We were the only visitors that day, but, we were told, the day before, there were 5 jeeps that made the trek. If you are into rock art, go before its too late. And the views of the surrounding valley are wonderful.
