We took this drive following the signs off I19 heading south on the way home from Tubac to Sierra Vista and found a nice fishing lake. Roads were winding but well maintained, parking area and bathrooms were available. Nice drive there. Desert oasis. We are not fisher people but there were people using the boat ramp to launch their small boats. Maybe you can swim there, not sure. Fishers would be upset, maybe there is a section on the lake that is for water fun. We didn't stay, just checked it out and moved on. There were people there having a picnic on the banks. Might be a good bird and wildlife watching site.

A beautiful setting with a great tail around the lake. We saw a Coopers Hawk and 2 green heronsas well as coots on the lake!

I had a great hike around this lake. There are restrooms at the boat ramp and trail head. The trail skirts much of the lake with an offshoot that offers some lovely vistas overlooking the lake and it’s surrounding area. Well worth it

So, we planned to take a day trip back to Lake Patagonia to get our water fix but saw the sign for Pena Lake and decided to take a little detour. We were hesitant to do this, after our huge disappointment earlier this year when we searched for Arrivaca Lake! But this time our exploration was rewarded with a little gem set among canyon walls, which was easily accessed by a relatively short PAVED road. Next time we will bring our dogs along, picnic lunch, and our binoculars.

This is a very nice recreation area in the Coronado National Forest near Nogales. To reach it, take exit 12 off I-19 for Ruby Rd. (AZ289) and follow it west about 9 miles into the scenic Pajarito Mountain Foothills. This is a well-maintained paved road. The lake fills Pena Blanca Canyon, so it is long and narrow, covering about 50 acres. It's surrounded by grassy hillsides and limestone rock formations. The elevation is 4000', so it can be cooler than the surrounding area and there is some different vegetation from the lower desert zones, including oak trees. Facilities include a campground, picnic areas, hiking trails, restrooms, fishing platforms and a boat ramp (motors 8HP or less). Most of the facilities are wheelchair accessible, including parking, restroom, fishing platforms, picnic area and paved walkways along the shore. There is no entrance fee but a valid Arizona license is required for fishing. We visited on a Friday morning in October and it was quiet and peaceful. This area gets very busy in summer, especially weekends and holidays, so plan your visit accordingly.

I was just there and one of the boarder patrol guy I spoke to told me it wasn't a super good Idea to camp there. He explained that walker canyon is a major drug smuggling route. So maybe just go here for the day.

South of Tucson and west of Rio Rico. Take exit 12 for 289 and go west. The paved road ends at the state park. Nice little lake, camping nearby, mostly day use areas at the park. Fishing is allowed at the lake/reservoir. For a nice nature experience or day trip this is a real treat in a not so far off the beaten path area. Bring your lunch and have a picnic in a nice scenic area.

I would canoe and hike with my dogs here growing up and the lake and surrounding infrastructure has recently been renovated. The view is nicer and the parking is much easier.

Had no idea what to expect as I just took the exit on impulse to check out the place. Didn't even know how far it was till I saw a sign later that said it was some 9 miles further down a deserted but well paved and very nice road. The lake itself is very beautiful and a great place for a family picnic if you want to get away from the crowd.

Does the lake area tend to be crowded on Sundays? We've always been there during the week when there's hardly a person in sight!

I didn’t, but I believe it’s allowed. There are a few water access points including a boat ramp.
