Paved rail to trail marked every 1/2 mile with numbers to follow if you can find a map. It does cross highway 3X with marked crosswalks/stop signs, very scenic with some places to stop here and there. There are many trees shading the trail most of the time, which is important for VA's very humid summers. There is food and a bike shop at both ends. Many big houses, farms, and equestrian areas on the way, nice general store about 2 miles from Purcellville end. Bring lots of water on ride, soak & wring out your Dri-fit shirt for wearing to keep cool, and to avoid heatstroke.
Trail also goes from Leesburg to Vienna, but its in the sun all the way; be prepared! Sterling has a bike shop and convenience store. there is nothing at trailhead in Vienna.

What a spectacular bike ride this was… Started in Sterling and rode to Purcellville and back on a mid-weekday morning, while everyone else was at work and this was the PERFECT time to ride it! I talked to many prior to this ride who all advised this is a beautiful trail, but the many families and folks who walk it with little regard for those riding it (walking across the entire path, not moving, etc) made it not so fun. So, I chose a time when there wouldn’t be as many on the trail and that made all the difference in the world! (BTW – Trail etiquette is very important!)
Some of the highlights of the ride were the beautiful views, from the horse farms and changing colors of the leaves to the seclusion of the trail with no one around. One of my favs was Sweet Rose Bake Shop at the end of the trail, such a “sweet” way to rewards ones self for such an accomplishment, in my case, it just meant grab a cup of coffee and slice of cake because I was only have way to the finish line, but it provided the nutrients needed for me to finish nicely!
Can’t wait to ride the W&OD again!

We came across this place by acciendt while taking an morning stroll from our hotel in the area. Turns out this path used to be the tracks for an old electric railway and it runs 45miles end ot end . The area we walked was paved an of course for a railway very flat through some stunning counryside . The only downside is its very popular and quite narrow so i can see it would get very crowded at busy times . i would love to walk it end to end if possible.

Having done seven marathons over the years and trained for numerous other events, the W&OD remains my wife and my favorite training trail. We recently got to see the trail terminus at Purcellville on a weekend getaway for our birthday (same day for us). Purcellville isa lovely spot to start or end the trail, which runs all he way to DC, 44.5 miles away. The trail is well maintained and the people are so friendly, a welcome break from the Mt Vernon trail closer to DC. No need to be ready to clothesline mean bicyclists if your running, or running down rude runners if you're riding. Everyone seems to respect each other and are out to enjoy the lovely trail, and get some exercise. Love the W&OD!!

This trail is maintained very well. I wish there were lights on the trail so it could be used at night. It would also be nice if there were a few more trash bins along the way to throw out dog poop. One of the main issues is that there are a lot of people using the trail and not everyone respects others on the trails.

Have been on this trail 100 times, love it every time. My son loves it too. We live in Arlington, I have taken all the way to leesburg but most of the time we go as far as Reston or use it to connect to other trails.

We rode today from Purcellville to Ashburn .the town of Purcellville is a quaint place. Loved the ride past farms, creeks, and mansions. Lots of people on the trail and you have to be careful especially when passing. I would love to ride the whole thing one day.

The W&OD Trail is a fantastic resource for all to enjoy. Jus today we rode from Leesburg to Purcellville. just 11 miles each way. Ate Dinner at Magnolia's in P-ville. All this on a heat advisory day! plenty of shade along the tree lines route.
This rails to trails route goes all the way to the Potomac River.... That's 50 to 60 miles of fun thru falls Church, Vienna, Reston... Amazing resource for us to enjoy.

We live close to this trail. It is a very nice trail for walking, biking, horse-riding, and jogging. Amazing to think that this trail can connect you to DC and places beyond. Cyclists get a great feel for the communities of Northern Virginia and can easily connect to other trails such as the Mount Vernon and C & O Trails.

Truly shows how the DC Metro area offers great options for walking, running, and biking. Great mix of urban and natural scenery.

Check with your hotel or online to find quick and easy access to the trails that are part of the W & OD park. These are well-used, often lighted, paved trails with larger park areas & playgrounds. Walk, jog, ride your bike, push a stroller, walk the dog. Enjoy!
