A must see if you are new to the Big Bend region. Very spacious, well-maintained facility. Exhibits, which include video, are well done...clear and detailed. The art/photos on display are a nice addition; the map room is excellent! The only knock on this place is the lack of signage off 90...there are numerous entrances to the campus, but nothing to point you to the museum's location. Same goes for Museum parking once you do finally locate the building.

A must-see when you are in the area. The recent expansion has added a modern wing with permanent and temporary art exhibits to add to the history of the original building.
Despite what the web site says of the new map collection general tours are not available of that room. Some of the maps are on display in two hallways but as near as I can tell the only access to the one by the map room is by stairs. The other maps are for researchers only and an appointment is required. Good luck getting that appointment.

This is a hidden gem of a museum. The Museum of the Big Bend is located on campus of the Sul Ross University. The exhibits are well planned and displayed. The have a comprehensive collection of the Big Bend and Alpine region. Every thing for civil war items to dinosaur bones to West Texas paintings. I was very impressed with all that they had on display. Be sure to take some time to see this museum.

Well done exhibits. Not a huge place, this is a plus for me. The map room was so interesting to see the progression of the territory before Texas became a State.

What a gem in Alpine! They have such interesting exhibits about settling this part of Texas. I love maps and they have between 40 and 45 old maps (late 1700’s / early to mid 1800’s) framed with explanations beside them. It’s very interesting to read how the maps were developed and how they improved over the years. This was a great stop in this little town.

Came to visit the area in a February and wound up spending some time in this museum. Enjoyed the free visit. Not a huge place, but definitely full of information and insights of the college and surrounding area. The full life-sized flying dinosaur (sorry, can't spell it!) was very impressive as was the fossilized bones of just ONE enormous wing. The usual cowboy, frontier, and old-time exhibits were also around to be enjoyed and to learn. Definitely a fun & interesting place to spend the time and if I had young kids it would be a MUST see spot.

The museum is so interesting and very well maintained. We loved the old maps. I was surprised to see Dan Blocker's hat. There so many littles to observe and say wow, especially in the chuck wagon and general store. The stuffed black bear is amazing. The museum is worth your time.

Beautiful museum facility on the Sul Ross University campus. Covers both prehistoric and later periods. Excellent signage and displays. New wing with art exhibits featuring both new material and pieces from the past. Add this place to your itinerary for a visit to Big Bend National Park and allot at least three hours for your museum visit.

We stopped here on our way to Big Bend. We were told about this museum by good friends and they were right! It was a gem! We learned so much about the area and the history. The people working there were so friendly and helpful and the gift store was very unique as well. A bonus was we were able to park our large RV in the campus parking lot.
