This was hands down one of the best cooking classes/tours I've ever done (and ive done a lot of classes)!! You get to learn how to make chocolate from the very beginning, a cacao tree on a farm, to a beautifully wrapped chocolate bar; and learn about traditional versus modern ways too! Not only was the cooking part cool, but you also learn a ton of great information about the history, science, and culture of chocolate! I 100% recommend this tour!!

We turned up expecting a general demonstration of how chocolate is produced and some useful tips and knowledge to take away.

Instead, what we experienced was an exposure to a wealth of information regarding the cocoa bean, chocolate production, history (stretching as far back as the Aztecs), science (including medicinal and psychological benefits), culture, agriculture, ecosystem and much much more...!

During our particular session there was supposed to have been a power cut by the Costa Rican energy company. Therefore our host Ancel had to improvise and she was clearly conducting this lesson from her superb knowledge of chocolate production and cocoa bean and not a template for a preplanned lesson.

Ancel's ability to depart and communicate knowledge is outstanding! Her knowledge and ability to communicate and teach mixed with her amicable personality and sense of humour makes this lesson an amazing experience and we thoroughly recommend her tour.

We really loved this workshop! Ancel is a passionate teacher and tells you a lot about cacao trees and the history which is very interesting. After that she goes through the process of making chocolate step by step. It is a must do if you are in the area!

There are 3-4 chocolate tours around the area and this one was great. You can make reservations online or call/WhatsApp to make them.

Started looking at trees and explaining the growth and history of the area. Then moved to the “kitchen” and participated in all of the steps of chocolate making. Went home with a bag of coco nibs and many small chocolates.

We did bring a 6 month old and it was great. One of us was able to step away and feed him/change diaper without a giant interruption. We did talk with her first and she said it would be okay.

I think some of the other tours have a greater focus on the cocoa plant and looking at the plantation. This has some of that, but is more hands on with a focus on the chocolate. The 2.5-3 hours went by really fast.

I had a lovely time in the Talamanca Chocolate workshop. Ancel, the owner, is delightful and a fountain of chocolate knowledge (pun intended). Ancel will walk you through the bean to bar experience starting with her beautiful cacao orchard. You will learn how to roast, winnow(remove shells) and grind cacao beans all the while tasting the many varieties of delicious Talamanca chocolate. Spending time with Ancel and eating Talamanca chocolate was the highlight of my Puerto Viejo trip.

This was just awesome! We of course did see what cocoa pods looks like but this visit was so much more. We got into the history of chocolate, how chocolate is made and we also did help in the making of chocolate. This was so rewarding. Ancel has been in this region for so many years, and she really shares her passion for the local culture and chocolate among many other things. The location is fun. It is also a small farm with local ducks, and other birds, dogs. the class is in a big kitchen where many other classes are held.

This was a really fun intro class for chocolate making. Ancel is extremely knowledgeable about not only cacao, but also about the history of Puerto Viejo. I very much enjoyed learning a bit of history as well as learning a few chocolate making tricks. 100% would come back for a longer course. Try their Cardamom chocolate bar... yummy!

We have booked the course via AirBNB. In 3.5 hours, Ancel explained everything about chocolate, its origins and production to us with great attention to detail. Afterwards we were able to make the chocolate ourselves. It was also a highlight for our 6-year-old daughter.
All produced chocolates are vegan!

Hubby and I booked a traditional plant medicine class through Airbnb in late July and had the pleasure of meeting Ancel and Sam. We were the only people on the tour that day. It was raining heavily on the afternoon of our class, so she modified it to include inside and outside components. Ancel was incredibly knowledgeable and taught us about plants before we explored the abundant garden and sampled different leaves as we learned about their medicinal properties and traditional uses. We enjoyed tea brewed from our favorite leaves as we chatted about plants, life in Costa Rica, family histories, pets, and many other things. We later ran into Ancel at the farmers market on Saturday and saw the many chocolate goodies she and her husband had for sale- visit their table if you get a chance. The class was a great experience and we highly recommend it or any of her other classes! I hope you enjoy the photos I shared.

Thank you! It was a pleasure working with you in the chocolate kitchen! The medicinal values of cacao are as wonderful as the best plant medicines. So glad you shared part of your vacation with me! Best wishes to you both (and the dog and cats!) Ancel
