Went here with my partner MIchele, son and his girlfriend. A very special site of historical interest. It is a must stop while in Southern Arizona.

Lovely trail that follows the Santa Cruz river. There is plenty of shade with a canopy. of trees. There hasn't been much rain so the trail was dusty.

A 4-mile segment of the much longer de Anza National Trail connects the old Presidio town of Tubac with the old Spanish mission in Tumacácori, Arizona. This is a vey walkable trail for anyone. The biggest elevation changes are about 5 feet (crossing small drainages into the Santa Cruz River), and the trail has vey few rocky segments. A bigger challenge would be related to water and mud. Heading south out of Tubac, the trail is either not close to the river or on a low bluff above the river. However, the trail is on the floodplain of the river for much of the last half of the distance to Tumacácori. The trail was completely dry today (1 February 2020). If there has not been recent precipitation, the trail should be dry.

About half of the distance is in the shade up to mid-afternoon, but the remainder of the distance is completely exposed. For this sun-starved Midwesterner, even the exposed sections were delightful on a winter day. Be aware that there is no potable water between Tubac and Tumacácori. There are several signs documenting the history of various places along the trail.

The trail is a favorite for birders, but anyone would enjoy a walk through this riparian environment. It is beautiful even in the winter.

After the heaviest rains in years, this trail is currently impassable at several points. We were able to walk a bout 11/2 miles from the Tubac end before being halted by a strongly flowing stream. From the other end it was possible to walk about 1/2 a mile. Saw a road runner at the Mission and a hawk at the Tubac end.

A sweet little path, along a creek with plenty of tree cover and birding opportunities. Nice but not worth going out of your way for.

I hiked from Tubac to Mission, 4 miles one way,,wife came and picked me up...lovely hike,,had to ford a small stream,,ran into 2 javalinas twice but they were easly scared off by making some noise. Can be buggy so bring spray...runs along the river, flat, well marked.

We started at the Tumacacori National Historic Site and walked 1 1/2 miles before encountering a log jam on the Santa Cruz River, so we walked back to our parking spot. It was fun to be on a small piece of a historic trail.

This is a beautiful, mostly flat hike on a well maintained trail along the Santa Cruz River. We started from the Tumacacori Trail Head, but were only able to hike about 1.25 miles before the trail became impassable.

Recently heavy water flows filled with debris (garbage really ) have re-routed the river to the extent that it now runs along the trail. If one wanted to wade through the flowing water, it's probably not that deep, but it's hard to tell and, from our perspective wouldn't be wise decision to continue. We will return at a later date to hike from the Tubac trail head instead.

We walked the Anza Trail three miles from the Tubac Presido south toward the Tumacácori National Historical Park and Mission. The walk was gorgeous until we were within a mile of the Mission when we came upon piles and piles of garbage strewn across the wide river bed. We turned around and hiked back to the Presido. On the upside, the Tubac Presidio and trail are dog friendly.
