This museum was very interesting although quite small, and the admission price is very reasonable. We are from Lancashire and we recently visited Lancaster Prison and although this is also a working establishment, the guided tour at Lancaster took us into the dungeons and old cells that were used in the past, and of course, unfortunately they cannot do this at Dartmoor prison. No doubt the staff do their best with limited facilities.
We think that the tourist information by the local tourist websites is very misleading since these centre on, and have photos of, the entrance to the actual prison, whereas the museum is on the opposite of the road a short distance away. They also say that there is a large car park opposite - the only large one we could find was for the prison staff only. The museum does have a small car park. Of some interest, located and hidden away downstairs at the museum is a large wonderful display of old agricultural machinery, and as this is not highlighted within the museum, we think that many people may have missed it.
Whilst in the village we went to the visitor centre and this was very interesting and is well worth a visit. No entry charge applies.
Finally, a word of warning regarding Dartmoor - in addition to lots of sheep roaming on the roads, which we are well used to living in Lancashire - there are a number of large hefty looking brown bulls - and my wife who was driving gave them a very wide birth!

Though I have been staying in the area on holiday for many years this is the very first time I have got round to visiting HMP Dartmoor Museum.
Only a small museum, housed in the former prison farm dairy, it tells the story of the prison through its establishment originally as a Prisoner of War camp during the Napoleonic and American War in the early 19th Century right through to its current operation as a category C prison.
Not as shiny and polished as some museums, but one gets the impression it is a museum which is regularly added to.
Take time to look at the displays in detail read about some of the prisoners from famous murderers to political inmates which included a one time future President of Ireland - Eamon de Valera.
Perhaps some of the more fascinating artefacts on display are items of contraband confiscated from prisoners right up to the present day. There are also examples of prisoners art and other work on display from the past and present.
There is also a gift shop which sells many items made my the prisoners ideal for for that unusual holiday gift!

This was a small venue and only took about 30 mins to get around. The man who booked us in my very helpful and the price was very cheap. My son loved the Easter egg hunt. We travelled an hour to get here so I’d say it wasn’t worth an hours trip but still a nice day out.

Worth an hour of your time.
Situated in the old prison dairy.
Friendly reception, some interesting exhibits.

masses of fascinating information about the lives of men incarcerated in this lonely moorland location. Their attempts to escape , smuggle in drugs and weapons, a photo of the last warder to patrol on his horse. The beagle packs used to search for escapees. There is so much to see !

Drove over from Yelverston to see the Prison in Princetown. Great trip across the moors but couldn't get to see much of the Prison due to roadworks, etc... I believe if you carried on across the roundabout you can see more. Hopefully next time. Did see a museum but it was unfortunate closed.

We popped in for an hour to have a look around, didn’t cost much and was really interesting, the tools confiscated by wardens really dangerous made by inmates, the staff were very friendly and gave us a good informative talk answering our questions. Worth looking around if your in the area especially a rainy morning. No pictures for this one as they are forbidden.

Looking through the record books to find my fathers name as he was a prison officer serving at Dartmoor in 1941.

We visited late in the afternoon and had 45 minutes to immerse ourselves into the displays. There is loads of information about the prison and plenty of artefacts - physical, film and written - related to it form the start to today. The displays are well done and the curation is very good. The detail is unique. Well worth a visit, but probably leave yourself about 1 to 1 1/2 hours to get the most of it.
