The Case de La Morena ws built in 1855 as a 'farm house' for a very rich mna, General Francisco Velarde, known as the "Golden Burro" (El Burro de Oro) because he was so wealthy. The murals were done by the Jalisco painter Gerardo Suarez, based on lithographs by Casimiro Castro, published in 1855. They show the life of the upper classes, and of ordinary Mexicns of tht era. this is the best collection of such are anywhere in Mexico.

The old house built 1855, is located at the main square of La Barca, and is well known as Casa de la Moreña (the house of the morish lady). It preserves a complete collection of 12 murals that picture the life & people from mid 1800´s, so well done from lithografies by Casimiro Castro, published 1855 in the book "México and it´s surroundings". Local tradition says that both the house and murals were made here to welcome Maximilian I, the european Emperor in Mexico 1864-1867, since the rich man who did the house Francisco de Velarde, will support & participate in the crowning of Maximilian. Nowadays the house is in good shape and, so are the murals. Make a stop on the way as you drive Guadalajara to Morelia, get off the highway at La Barca turn off and after a few miles, enjoy the view of ancient Mexico in this famous Museum.

What family runs the museum? Who started it? Was it the Spanish?
