I went to lounge for drink at 10 pm before an 11:30 pm flight. The bar was closed even though lounge open and plenty of staff around. I wasted a loung pass and United has told me to get stuffed, even though I’m a gold member.

Flew back redeye from Hawaii with my daughter and the connecting flight wasn’t until early afternoon. So decided to use a couple of day passes to check out the United Club. We didn’t have much expectations and were simply looking for some respite from the loud COVID announcements that came on every 2-3 minutes in the terminal. We settled in a back corner and with simple snacks and an electrical outlet were more than happy. Trouble came a couple hours in when we were getting tired.
My daughter is short in statue and her legs dangled uncomfortably while sitting on the lounge chair. She tried but the only position she could get comfortable was laying down sideways across two chairs. 15 minutes later I noticed the ceiling speakers started playing a “mask mandatory” announcement every couple minutes or so. This is most probably a coincidence but haven’t heard the announcement since after the next event.
Then we get a visit from the front desk lady who showed her annoyance at us. She looked at me, gestured at my daughter, muttered something about “can’t have this, the manager is right there”, then stepped back facing us security guard style. It took a couple gentle push to wake up my daughter, all while being watched and eagerly urged on by the lady. The lady did say thank you after my daughter righted herself.
The third event happened about half an hour later. Without a word or looking at us, the cleaning cart guy put a garbage can next to us. I looked at our surroundings and did not find any opened or half-eaten food. My daughter and I looked at each other, feeling unwelcome. It felt like a gesture to leave. Our flight started boarding 15 minutes later so we did leave.
We are rules abiding individuals so I looked over the “United Club terms and conditions”. There is nothing against sleeping but it did have a clause about no lying on the floor or placing feet on furniture.
Looking back, I do commend the employees for doing their jobs, which was not always easy. However, I think they could do better and I would appreciate if they could just tell me directly “sorry cannot put feet on furniture” or something like that instead of being passive aggressive about it.
It’s a shame because one would think a long layover after a redeye would be the perfect situation to use the Club. However, the Club does have an image to maintain for the business and first class passengers, who garner a much higher priority than the day-passers.

A Very Nice Smaller United Club on the East Pier at SFO T3
In January, we were flying back home, SFO-PHX, after a wine event in San Francisco, and stopped into the United Club on the East Pier in T3. Since it has opened (only a few years now), we really enjoy this UA Club, and seem to fly out of SFO more from the East Pier now, than from the West Pier, with the older, but still nice UA Club - a place where we spent many, many hours, before our homeward flights. We did that almost every month (or more often) for 18 years. Then, most of our flights departed from the West Pier, but not so often now.
This United Club was one of the first at SFO to feature the décor, that would find its way into the Polaris Lounges, and is still fairly new. It is smaller than many UA Clubs, but very nice. There are basically three seating areas: a livingroom-like area, upon entry, with rows of comfortable seats, with reading/work lamps and lots of AC outlets, then a little “bistro-like” area, in front of the bar, and finally a seating area beyond the bar, near the buffet. We always seem to find the table close to the bar, at the edge of this area, available and refer to it now as “our table.” We took it, yet again. The only drawback to seating in this particular area is that there are no AC outlets, but being right in front of the bar, my wife has always been able to plug in her phone, at one of the many outlets, built into the bar.
In January, we did get a plate of Cheese & Crackers from the buffet area, and then two glasses of the Rombauer Napa/Carneros Chardonnay, from the “Premium Wines” list.
I was disappointed that our favorite bartender, Ken, was not on duty. We have sort of followed him for years, starting at the UA Club on the West Pier, then to the temporary Club, near the East Pier, which was opened, while this Club was being built, and then he moved here, about the time that our flights started going out of the East Pier. We’ll catch up with him next time maybe.
As always, a nice time, nice wine and some cheese, before our later flight back home. This is now one of our favorite UA Clubs, throughout the USA, and I think we have visited them all.

I might be incredibly fussy with lounges or been treated with Air NZ so much my standards are bloody high. United Lounge offers a place to get away from up stairs at SFO. Limited snacks and not hot food. Beer on tap is great but they were to keen to change the keg when it started spitting out froth. I’d prefer to fly out of LAX

I had an hour and a half before my flight to Vancouver, so I took advantage of my United Air points and dipped into the United Club. After a warm greeting from the agents upon check-in
I was faced with a plethora of breakfast goodies and an Espresso machine to help me wake up.
I had my choice of; cereals, oatmeal, mini bagels and cream cheese, muffins, breads and jams, fruit and yogurt with a variety of tasty toppings. Also, sodas, juices and alcoholic bevs too. No hot foods though. I was sort of craving scrambled eggs this morning.
Definitely a good spot to chill if you have a while before your flight. Free Wi-Fi and plenty of cozy seats to sit and relax.

Clean and nice respite for 4 hour lay over however didn’t seem food choices were as varied as in times past.

This is just an average United Club, and I didn't think it was anything special. It's better than waiting in the airport in no club...
