Another suggestion from friends was to visit Ellenborough Falls which are one and a half hours outside of Port Macquarie. Ellenborough Falls is the tallest single drop waterfall in New south Wales, with a drop of 200 metres it is amongst the tallest in the southern hemisphere. The distance to the falls from Port Macquarie is 80kms but the road gets a little bit hairy as you get closer slowing you down to drive to the conditions. The Ellenborough River eventually flows into the Hastings River after dropping off the Bulga Plateau into a gorge at the falls. There had been quite a bit of rain this week so the falls were quite heavy which was really good luck for us. The lookout to the falls is at the car park so it is easy for everyone to access, there is a walk down to the head of the falls which is 80mts from the car park initially down a dirt track that has been graded into steps to make it a bit easier before finally coming to the wooden stairs that lead the remainder of the way to the lookout at the head. It was worth walking down here to get a different view of the gorge and the river.

We travelled to the Falls from the direction of Wingham on the Bulga Road and encountered approximately 10 kilometres of winding, and narrow in sections, dirt road before we reached a section of sealed road just before the turn-off to the Falls.
There is a large sealed car park, picnic facilities, a toilet block and a Kiosk at the crest of the falls.
It had been raining when we visited so there was a lot of water cascading down into the valley. You get a good view of the Falls from a wooden platform at the top or you can descend the 641 steps (according to the Information Board in the car park) down to the bottom.
We walked the approximately 150/200 metre path through the undergrowth and down 102 steps (some slippery in the wet conditions) to get to a large lookout at the crest of the Falls.
Well worth a look.

When travelling check the roads are open as there was road works and access limited to the weekends.
Take it slow, winding mountain dirt road.
Good sized carpark and grassed areas for a picnic.
Toilet block
Kiosk - that sells fresh baked pies, hamburgers, drinks and snacks. Small operation though really enjoyed a fresh pie and a drink after the exploring. Believe the kiosk is open weekends only.
The walk down to the bottom is very very steep, remember that for the walk back up. Knees felt it on the way down as there are a lot of stairs, the wooden decked pathway is wet and in spots slippery. There is a hand rail all the way.
The walk up was slower and gave the knees a workout.
Great views on the way down and the bottom of the falls - worth the exercise if you able.
You can view the falls from the top as well which is an easy walk from the carpark.
Must do

Great waterfall esp when it has just rained. The 642 wooden steps down to the bottom of the fall is well worth it but they are narrow, slippery in the wet & hard to climb back up. The width of the steps is for 1 person only. If other people are there, the climb would be very slow. There are resting area's along the climb. The vegetation is close to the steps causing the area to be very humid in summer.

Day trip to ellenborough Falls and bago maze winery.
Left Port Macquarie for ellenborough Falls. What a great drive extremely scenic and a surprise when you head on the dirt roads winding through the hills. Definitely a great drive.
The falls have three areas one a short walk to a viewing platform which is above the Falls. Worth a look but not as good as the rest. The other was are to a lookout on the other side which gives you a view of the entire Falls. An easy walk and worth doing.
However the best walk is to the base. Lots of steps and can be a bit slippery but a must however if you have a bung knee or hip it's not for you. It's a tough climb back up. The views at the bottom are great and a little swimming hole at the base of the Falls. They are a 200 metre drop and definitely for the fit or people in reasonable shape a must.
Now the drive back to the winery. A great place for kids and the cheese platter is the star over the wine. Sadly. Hopefully that will change and the wine will improve but it's all drinkable and it's another drive on a dirt road to reach it. A good day out. I hope you all enjoy.

We were there over Easter and it was quite busy.
The falls were still pumping after the recent rain and were great to see.
We walked around to the viewing area to get a shot square into the falls. While over there we also took a small trail into the bush and viewed the most magnificent huge Brushbox trees. Worth a look.

It was a good time to visit. The country was lush and gree and plenty of water was thundering down the falls. The drive up was great, especially in a 4WD not normal cars can get through. Clean toilets at site.

Amazing waterfall just near the carpark. Due to generous rains in the past few months, the waterfall was spectacular to see. The lookout is located just at the carpark and you can go for a hike with some 164 steps into the amazing fern track to see the waterfall from the front. The drive was wonderful with some amazing views in between. Be mindful of the gravel road which starts around 8-10 km before the car park.

Well worth the rather hairy 10 km of dirt road journey to get there. There are 3 choices of viewing spots, the easiest just 30 metres from the car park at the top of the falls. For the fit, you can walk to the bottom of the falls. For the not so adventurous, the (fairly flat) 700 metre path the the opposite side of the valley gives a great view of the whole waterfall.

My sense is there is a camping ground at Ellenborough Reserve which is not far from the falls. Closed at the moment due to the virus restrictions. Hope this helps.

What is the best way to get to the waterfall? The maps don't show which roads are dirt.
Also which viewing platforms are wheelchair accessible?

Don't be put off by the dirt road, it is part of the Tourist Drive Number 8 that is one of the best kept secrets of the Pacific Coast Tour. Have a look at the Manning Valley to Port Macquarie – Tourist Drive 8 on the Legendary Pacific Coast website.
The Mid Coast Council and Port Macquarie Council have been spending millions of dollars to grade and surface the road. It is a great adventure with views of ancient forests and patchworks of green farmland stretching to the valleys below. You don't need a 4x4!

I have swum down the bottom of the falls. It is just magic. Just be careful of the rocks getting in as they tend to be slippery. You can also walk upstream from the falls and there are some nice pools.
If you drive up past the falls around 6 km and turn off left into Rapid Road. Follow it down and cross the bridge. Around the corner there is a grassy area. Walk down to the creek and there is a wonderful natural swimming hole.
Have fun!

We are trvelling with a dog, can we take her in to the falls?
Escrita el 19 de junio de 2015
Its dog friendly but it needs to stay on a lead. A word of warning, the locals here have and will report the number plates of owners who do not clean up after their dog. A ranger also visits the falls regularly. Also, theres a lot of ticks here, check your dog over when you leave.
