Great restoration
may de 2019
First let me say that I am biased but read on. I helped with the archaeological dig in the summer of1967 that uncovered this site. At that time it was only slight rise on the south bank of the Snake river. The only hint that it was there were small pieces of burnt wood (the post had burned down a few years after it was built) and broken chinking from between the logs. I didn't see the post again until several years after it was rebuilt I was astonished when I literally ran into Prof. Leland Cooper who had supervised the dig when I was there. I was surprised he recognized me. We had a very nice reunion and we both expressed our pleasure at how faithful the restoration weas. The last time I was there was a couple of years ago and trees were much taller and they had added several reenactors and period structures (Native American and fur trader). It is easy to get to. From I35 take the exit at Pine. City and turn west. Follow the signs a few miles and you will be there. I am sure you will enjoy it. I have to give a big thanks to the Minnesota Historical Society for their efforts to restore this site.

Not Impressed
ago de 2019
This fur post was recommended by other Trip Advisor folks, but I was not impressed. There was a guide who took us through the settlement and he was a bit odd and not very entertaining. I did learn about the history of beaver fur trading, but that wasn't enough to impress me. People from my home town kept warning me about the huge mosquito population in Minnesota and the only time that I was bitten during my 8 day stay was here at the Fur Post. The silly guide made us sit in a teepee and suddenly I was swarmed by mosquitos. Unless you really want to learn about beaver fur trading, I would not recommend a visit. I'm sad that I had to pay to visit.

We visited the Snake River Fur Post run by the Minnesota Historical Society. A voyageur was our tour guide. He was very informative about how the fur trade operated both at the post and throughout the world. The post is a reconstruction on the exact site where they found it through an archaeological dig. I learned a lot. We probably stayed about two hours. They have an indoor museum and then the tour goes outside to an Ojibwe wigwam and the post. Would definitely recommend a visit.

The site is a great time. The visitors center has great exhibits and wonderful information.
The post is a great recreation of the post and full of historical information. The staff provides great information about the area, the fur trade, and life during the early 1800's

when you are within a 20-mile radius of Pine City. The facility and our docent were outstanding. The influence of business was very evident from the need to satisfy the fashion need for beaver hats in Europe to the marriages of traders with native women. The living situation was tough for all.

You should visit this wonderful attraction in Pine City. It is fascinating, educational, and the gift shop has wonderful keepsakes that are not too "pricey"!

Excellent Step back in Time!

We've visited many fur trade posts over the years. This is one of the best. The visit started with an interpretive tour with a guide dressed in period garb. She did an excellent job of explaining the fur trade in the big picture and then talked at length about the role of the Snake River fur post played in it. In each room of the recreated fur post building, our guide talked about the voyageurs, clerks, and the trader who lived there, using historical documentation as source material. Mercedes, our guide, was superb.

The museum exhibits in the visitor's center were clear and informative, with many things one can handle and touch, including furs. Short exhibit films highlighted important issues.

There's a great little gift shop in the visitor's center, featuring many regionally-made reproduction items as well as a wide range of books for both kids and adults.

If you're in the area, don't miss this place. It's well worth a visit.

Excellent tour of a fur trading post in the early 1800s

My husband and I have toured many fur trade posts in the midwest and had actually been here 20 years ago. The site has been updated with a new Visitors center, museum and gift shop. But the part we enjoyed the most was our tour of the fort with a "voyageur". The re-enactor, a passionate history teacher in real life, did an excellent job describing the times, the lives of the voyageurs and the native people of the area. We were the only ones on a late afternoon tour and my husband asked a lot of questions that he was able to answer. I would definately recommend stopping if you are in the area.

What an entertaining and informative tour!

My soon to be 7th grade nephew was given a free pass to the Minnesota Historical sites this summer as an extension of his 6th grade Minnesota History studies.

Our tour guide was wonderful able to answer all of our questions. It was a great hands on interpretive tour that was interesting to a 12 year old as well as the other senior citizens on the tour. We learned about the life of a Voyaguer and the life of the natives in 1804. The guide had many props such as the hides of wolf, skunk, beaver and mink for us to touch and feel.

I would highly recommend this for any group on of any age that is interested in our states history.
