We must start with the Visitor Center with a friendly ranger very available and a beautiful staging of animals likely to meet (which was not our case). Several picnic areas, part of them in the shade. Then we took the short walk of 0.3 mile for lack of time. But it was very well appointed and we really had a very good overview of this small park. It was beautiful, peaceful and mysterious. This bayou is worth a visit.

Even though due to flooding most of the trails were closed, we still enjoyed walking around and seeing the beauty of the cypress trees. The visitor center was clean and the attendant was friendly and helpful. Although we did not rent a canoe, we did see a couple enjoying a paddle on the peaceful water. We definitely want to go back when it dries up.

We drove to Merchants Millpond for a day visit. The visitor center is impressive and there was a wonderful separate room for younger children with activities and animal and bird displays. There are several flat hiking trails. The boating area is great for canoeing or kayaks. We happened to meet a man who has been coming from Vermont to the park for 20 years because of the unique habitat.
the campsites look small and there is no electrify, but would be fine for tent camping. If you do plan to come in the summer watch out for bugs.

If you are looking to get the perfect experience of being in a fantasy adventure while canoeing this is the place. From cypress trees to moss hanging to yellow Lilly pad flowers blooming not to mention Mother Nature at her best.

The Millpond is idyllic for paddling...like no where else I've ever been. It's like paddling on black glass, with vibrant reflections of the amazing trees. The campground is quiet, the campsites are spaced far apart, and the bathhouse is immaculate with nice hot showers. We were there 4/14-4/16/21 and there were literally no insects (even after a hard rain). No mosquitos, no ticks, no flies. Timing is everything. The visitor center staff was pleasant and helpful.

Merchants Millpond is the hidden gem of the NC State Parks! I was initially hesitant to schedule a trip based on it's description as a "swamp" but I am so glad I did. Firstly, the drive to the park is wonderful. No traffic on the smaller highways, plenty of adorable little towns to stop in.
Second, the visitors center is easy to find, you can buy bundles of firewood there (which burned really well!) and the rangers were so nice.
The campsites were amazing! We stayed at Family Campsite #1 and had a huge firepit, a nice picnic table, and a raised area for the tent. This meant that we had a guaranteed flat and non-rocky sleeping experience. While you aren't too far from others, the site was set back from the road a little and densely forested so you still get that true "camping" feel. The water spigot was fresh, cool, clean, and super close to our site.
This was the NICEST bathhouse I have ever seen at a campsite!!! It was incredibly clean, dry, well-lit, stocked, odorless. The showers were so warm and had nice hooks/shelf to hold your belongings where they wouldn't get wet. Seriously, I was blown away by the bathhouse.
The hiking trails were incredible. I highly recommend the Coleman Trail, it was my favorite that we did. The trails are well made and there are bathrooms near the beginnings, places to sit along the way, and gorgeous views.
Kayaking on Merchants Millpond was wonderful as well. The plants are breathtaking up close, and once you get away from the edge there is not as much of the green stuff.

This place provided one of the best kayaking experiences we’ve ever had. Beautiful, majestic landscape. Green fluorescent duckweed, giant cypress trees reaching up from the water. And yes we were even rewarded with an alligator swimming through the pond. Followed him for a good 10 minutes, keeping a very safe distance. It was amazing. You can easily spend an entire day on the water here. We kayaked for about 4 hours and wanted more. It is an easy, meandering paddle. And it is a swamp, in some places pushing through the lily pads and reeds would entangle your paddles and make for slow going but that’s all part of the journey. Easy to get turned around and lose yourself but also not so big that you can’t follow the basic terrain and spot the buoy’s or use GPS to easily find yourself on the map. Highly recommend.

We hadn't been here for many years. Facilities used to be very rustic. Now there is a beautiful, modern visitor center with some good exhibits. This is where we rented a canoe to spend some time on the pond, sort of a cypress swamp with open areas of water. The price was a very reasonable $7. for the first hour. We walked to the shed by the water to get our life vests, paddles, and the canoe. There is a well-marked (by buoys) canoe trail through the pond. We've never seen so many turtles sunning themselves! Besides the tranquil nature of the pond and the ease of paddling, we saw an eight foot alligator sunning itself on the bank. This was a good time to be here as there were no bugs and oppressive summer heat and humidity. There are a couple of canoe campgrounds.

My daughter visited this park last summer and told me it is a must visit, now I know what she meant. The Visitor Center is very nice with a friendly staff. The exhibits are very nice but when you get to the water it will blow you away. I love the big trees growing in the pond, the water spillway is very impressive and the dark water just tops it off. There is nothing like this in Central North Carolina where I am from. I would have liked to canoe the pond but it was too cold. This is a must see park.

Not much was said about this attraction on maps and such, but when we went past the "brown sign" announcing a state park, we decided we would stop and check it out! Turns out that was one of the best decisions we made that day! We aren't from the North Carolina area so we didn't know what to expect but there was a great rest area with fire pits and a knowledge center along with a helpful attendant! There were canoes to rent if you wanted and THE LAKE!!! The lake was beautiful with all the trees growing out of the middle of it! Apparently one could also see alligators there which would have been fun! My family loved taking in the sights here! I can't imagine how beautiful it would be in the spring and summer when trees were fully green!

Can canoes be reserved in advance and can they be rented overnight?
Escrita el 22 de agosto de 2023
Are they going to do the canoe trip to look at the alligators? The last time I saw it was March 2020 but canceled because of covid. It was to be a guided tour with the rangers.

Are the mosquitoes really bad here in the summer and/or fall?
Escrita el 11 de agosto de 2016
We went in November to both the Great Dismal Swamp (border of NC/VA) and the Merchants Millpond State Park out of concern for mosquitoes, and, of course, there were no mosquitoes.

Are there alligators around this area and is it safe for a 2 years old to come canoeing with a family?
Escrita el 14 de julio de 2016
Hi, I'm a Park Ranger at Merchants Millpond. The alligators are not an issue, since we don't allow swimming in the park. Also, if you check out a lot of the videos on Youtube, when people try and get close for a better photo, the alligator slides in the water and moves to get away. They don't want to have anything to do with people. A Ranger at the park is always happy to answer any questions if you call or stop by the park.
