We went to Central Akumal during our stay in North Akumal. There’s a lot of inexpensive and excellent food in “Old Akumal”. Definitely stop by the Farmer’s market to take some fruit to your home away from home.

We are staying on Half Moon Bay in North Akumal, Mexico.
On Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday there is a farmer's market in the center of the Pueblo of Akumal. We get there by walking through Akumal, by Akumal Bay, to the main highway that runs from Cancun to Tulum. There is a walkway over the highway for pedestrians. Once over the highway it is a short walk to the center of the Pueblo of Akumal.
You will find the Farmer's Market in the center of the road near the largest grocery store in town.
The farmer will hand you a plastic basket. Fill it with your selections, hand it back and you will be told how much it will cost.
Have no fear, we purchased a pineapple, papaya, ginger, zucchini and multiple mangos all for around $6 US. All delicious.
We pay in Mexican pesos for the best rate. I don't know if you can pay in US.
If you decide to go, in addition to supporting local farmers and getting great produce, you will see what life is like in a small Pueblo on the Mexican Riviera. While in the Pueblo we have wandered through the hardware store, grocery stores and pharmacy.
On the way, and in the Pueblo look for the murals, some of which were created during the Animal 2018 art festival.
If walking or biking is not your thing there are 3 wheeled taxis available for a fee.
From where we stay in the center of Half Moon Bay it is about a 30 minute walk.

Ok we had heard there was a farmers market in Akumal and were super stoked to find it. We rode our bikes into Akumal Village the first Wednesday we were here and did not see a market. Hmmmmm. We asked the guy at information, he didn’t speak English and we don’t (as yet, but working on it) speak much Spanish. I could however get across I was looking for vegetables.
Now if you go to most of the stores the veggies look a little warm and tired, as we make all our own food we wanted something a little more fresh than we’d seen in Super Chomak.
Oh vegetales, he responded, and pointed to past the barrier near the basketball court and behind the taxis. We couldn’t see anything but off we went (it’s about 60 yards).
Behind the craft stalls there is was-ONE stall. We looked and smiled at one another, used to big farmers markets in California, this was a little different.
But let me tell you something, this little stall has had every thing we need for the past two weeks, we are here for 7 weeks and this is a twice a week activity for sure.
We stocked up on melon, pineapple, peppers, potatoes, lettuces, cucumber, onions, avocados-oh the avocados are soooooo good, well all of it is, let me continue, mushrooms, broccoli, tomatoes, spring onions, and grapes.
Each times has been about 200 pesos, what a bounty we bring home and the quality is fresh and the colors vibrant-just how we like our veggies.
It appears to be a family who run it, Mum an Dad with little ones playing, they don’t speak English and that’s fine, just gather what you want, don’t mess with asking prices and pay at the end where she will show the calculator with the price.
Interestingly I told my friend who lives between here and California how stoked we were to find the market and he asked where it was! It seems to be a hidden gem, which is a shame because it truly is all you need, great produce at great prices.
Whether you are cooking all your meals like us, or you want a fabulous pineapple, or melon or some grapes for your day trip out, this is well worth a walk by.
Open Wednesday and Saturday 8-5. Can’t recommend highly enough. We made the best salad with lime vinaigrette from there on Sunday-ohhh makes my mouth water, reckon it might do the same to yours.

Are there flowers at the market?
Escrita el 14 de febrero de 2019
I didn’t see flowers at the market when we were there in November and December. But maybe in season they do. Best thing is to go to the stall and ask Carlos who is there every Wednesday and Saturday :)
