I have been going to the mesa country and Black Mesa State Park for some 50 years. The state park itself has improved substantially in recent years. Attracts birds and waterfowl. There are now a series of trails, and the creek area allowing natural vegetation to prosper has been more inviting for nature and bird watching. They cleared it for a while a while back, and it was not good for the critters, but the trees and weeds now present are a boon for nature watching--from birds to butterflies to dragonflies to lizards. It has the darkest skies in the country (on a new moon). Staying up, or just waking up in the middle of the night has been an awesome and jaw-dropping experience (like holy cow!!!) enhanced by the way they they control lighting. Makes it a unique place in Oklahoma. It is a wild open space place, and I hope they recognize the value of dark skies and habitat for the critters they have out there and make it even better.

We camped at Black Mesa campground in a 30 foot 5th wheel. The sights were closer than I thought based on a YouTube video but it was fine. Everyone is very respectful of your space and nice. The rangers were very helpful, friendly and available. The Camps Works store was also perfect. They had lots of items camper would need. I was very impressed with the assortment of items like fuses, clamps, and rv repair supplies in case of something on the rv needs a quick fix. The stars were also amazing. The Milky Way, shooting stars and passing satellites provided hours of entertainment. During the day we hiked and rode bikes. Great campground and the skies did not disappoint.

We traveled and camped for 2 nights there to see the Kenton Easter Pageant. We enjoyed that very much. This is our second time to Black Mesa Park and enjoyed it as much as the first time. If you are looking for low key nature hikes with a little history this is a great place for you. If you or your children want to be entertained by electronics, shopping, and fast food options this is probably not your spot.

Black Mesa is a beautful state park in Oklahoma on the state border that looks and feels a lot more like New Mexico or Colorado. It is here within 1/4 of New Mexico and 4.5 miles of Colorado that you can stand on the highest point of Oklahoma. It is near the tip end of Black Mesa that starts in Colorado before reaching its dramatic end just in Oklahoma.
The mesa is beautiful difference in western Oklahoma after miles and miles of flat plains. In fact I knew the elevation change would be coming but it is almost Kenton before you actually see it. Here you have hills and elevation changes created by erosion. The geological formation that creates this unique environment is the remains of a lava flow that has resisted the wind and water erosion around it. The igneous rock also gives the black color to the rocks that are especially visible on the mesa's edges.
Again it is the highest point in Oklahoma which makes it a great visit. However, even if you don't want to hike, it is a great park to visit just for the diversity in scenery, flora (trees and shrubs) and fauna (mountain lions and pronghorn). I greatly enjoyed my time here.

We spent 3 nights here in a travel trailer. We thought the best spaces were the area when you first come in (we were in space #2). The hill there gives a little protection from wind. We loved this place. Well maintained. Used the campground bathroom 1 time and it was spotless. Very few campers here during our visit (2 or 3 others). Lots of nice tent spots. Loved the scenery, beautiful creek, hiking trails. We like to watch birds and even though we were too early for most migrants, we enjoyed what was there. Hiking trails are not extensive, so we went off trail to get more mileage. Ground is very rocky. The little ranger station is neat -- don't miss the snake display! It had limited hours this time of year. We didn't bring our spotting scope and wished we would have for the water birds, great horned owl, and the night sky. Very quiet. Some cool nearby attractions if you are willing to drive a bit. The dinosaur tracks are a must see. We were advised by other campers not to visit the petroglyph canyon that is about a 50 minute drive -- they said the road is really rough. Short grass prairie is lovely. This place is really off the beaten track, which is what we were looking for. We have cut rate cell plan that uses Verizon network (but it doesn't always work that way). We had no cell service except right at the ranger office, where it was great. Free wifi signal right there. Very nice for checking messages etc since we were a long ways from home. We did not do the entire Black Mesa pinnacle hike (outside the park, maybe 20 minute drive) but it is worth a drive over that way. Wildlife! It's not a huge park, but scenic. We were there in March and temps varied A LOT. Low of 16, high of 72. We didn't have kids with us, but there's lots for them to do here including a wonderful sandy swimming hole.

Birding here, found it very quiet and clean. Plenty of trails and roads for walking. Nice little ranger station, very friendly young lady working. She was informative on birds and wildlife around. Was a good visit.

Black Mesa is a perfect place to watch meteor showers! Lots of hiking trails. Perfect fishing spot. Very clean and quiet campgrounds and ranger station close by. Need to make sure you have everything you need though as the nearest town doesn't offer much.

Some of the best and most scenic camping I've ever experienced. We had a tent site on the edge of the water and it's a dark sky park so the night skies are phenomenal.
I recommend locating the small section of dinosaur tracks nearby. Use a GPS and be mindful of your vehicles capabilities unless you are hiking to them because they are out in the middle of nowhere. The drive is fun and very scenic.

i think it looks like they have tried to really pack a lot of entertainment into such a remote location. there is a trail with signs identifying plants and things. there is a little petrified forest, a little place to discover dinosaur bones, a bird watching area, volleyball net.... the little swimming hole is beautiful!
if i had any advise to give, it would be don't get by the dump station. it stinks worse than any park we have been to. we stayed in site 15 and had wifi and had data and a phone signal on ATT phones. the awnings over the picnic tables are nice.
I've seen reviews mentioning stickers. they weren't terrible at our site but there were more near the volleyball net area.
keep an eye out if you come from boise city... there are SO MANY prairie dogs and antelope. that was one of my favorite things! :)

We enjoyed the nature in and around the lake. We saw many almost tame deer so we were able to get some fantastic photos. The birding is very good with many different species to be found. A golden eagle was our highlight. Can't say anything about the fishing but there were campers of all sorts all over the lake in chilly late April. The petrified wood exhibit is four logs dragged from some place else and was disappointing. The one trail I attempted, i had to turn back as I had on shorts and the dead plants just whipped my legs raw.

Is there fishing at black mesa? Do you need a boat to fish?
Escrita el 9 de febrero de 2019
Sorry, I didn’t see your question...there is fishing at the lake nearby and you are allowed to have a boat, not sure it’s required

Is it permitted or possible to ride mountain bikes up the trail to the monument? If not, are there bike trails in the area?

The hours say the park is closes at 5pm. Are the gate still open after that hour to visit the park (at least until sunset)?
Escrita el 4 de octubre de 2017
I'm not entirely sure (we always stay at a local B&B), but since people camp overnight at the State Park, I cannot imagine that they lock the gates after 5pm. In fact, I'm pretty sure we have hiked there after 5 pm.
You may be aware of this, but Black Mesa, strangely enough, is not located within Black Mesa State Park. Black Mesa is a couple of miles to the west, on Nature Conservancy land. The SP is nice, but if you want to hike to the highest point in Oklahoma, you have to hike Black Mesa. Enjoy!

Thinking of a visit the week of Thanksgiving. Looking for ....what can I expect weather wise, and would it be a good place to photograph the stars, in particular the Milky Way?
Escrita el 17 de julio de 2017
Really hard to predict the weather in Oklahoma, especially that time of year. Could be in the 70s or snowing. Most likely 40s or 50s. Should be great! But it could be really windy, so be prepared!
As long as it's not cloudy, Black Mesa is one of the best places in the country for star-gazing.
