We hiked the Shades of Death trail. I We are in our 60's and our daughter is in her 30's' and we are in decent shape. We are used to walking in an urban setting but not vigorous hiking, so this felt a bit challenging (in a good way) The hike took us one hour. The terrain is uneven large rocks and roots, so you have to watch your step to be careful not to twist you ankle. I would not recommend this hike if the ground were wet or icy. The trail runs beside a stream and features a waterfall. It is very pretty.

We were to arrive here 7/26 but had an emergency roadside situation with our travel trailer and waited 9 1/2 hours on the side on the road for help. Let this park know and we had to cancel both days. They charged us fees and 1st day. Once it was fixed that day we saw our space we paid for was available so we called to rebook it but were told it was now only a walk in. We told them we had paid for that space already but they would not reinstate it but we could come as a walk up (do drive 5
hrs to see if it was ) after our 9 hour wait in the sun to have our rv fixed) for a space I had paid already for. No matter the emergency and the hell we went through would they reinstate it or be helpful in any way.

It is huge! What a beautiful State Park.
My only problem was with the lack of signs showing direction and locations especially as you enter the Park.
The first thing that should be posted is “Go to Welcome Center upon entering Park to Resister if you are Camping”.
That’s the last thing listed.
We drove in tried to read the sign quickly because we would be holding up traffic for others entering the Park, bared Left and should have gone to Welcome/Visitors Center First.
Had to drive all the way in to turn around and go back to Welcome Center.
It was raining which made it worse!
You can get lost in these back woods.
Also Please put up More Signs! Showing miles, locations and specific areas. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT! 😁
When you’re driving an RV and Towing a vehicle you need a lot of good information to help make the trip more enjoyable and less stressful.
The people working there and the Park Rangers are all Awesome!
The Exhibit inside of the Welcome Center is Outrageous! A Must See!!! Awarding winning!

Awesome camping and state park! Tent sites with electric and cabins too! They have miles and miles of hiking trails, Disc Golf and a swimming lake with a beach!

We did the shades of death trail in Hickory Run State park. It’s an absolutely beautiful walk along the water. You will pass several waterfalls along the way. Trail was muddy which made it slippery at times. Lots of tree roots. Some areas you have to climb up some rocks. Very well marked path. I would rate it moderate/difficult. Some elevation but not extreme. No wheel chair or stroller friendly. Would be challenging for a young child Small parking lot with a port a pottie available. This is a must do hike.

Total disappointment. Tried to have a picnic but a family was playing filthy music with sexual content regardless of all the kids nearby. Called office but they did nothing. So we went to find the manor house only to find that once beautiful historic building in shambles! And we had been there only a few years ago and it had been In much better condition so it had been absolutely neglected. This is one of a few only remaining buildings in this area that is still standing "1840!" so you would think that they would have some pride in that. But apparently no one in the park or the community cares at all. What a sad loss of history!

Loved the Hawk Falls trail. Not long at all, although you do have to watch your step. Parking is limited, so it pays to get there early, or go on a weekday. We also went to Boulder Field....very unusual site. It's a vast field of boulders in the middle of the forest. It was nice to sit there and relax.

This was a great discovery, what a gem of a park. Fishing was our main reason for going and we were not disappointed. The hiking trails were well marked and laid out, easy to navigate. The visitors center was a plus as it offered clean rest rooms, a plethora of information and a history of the park.

Been to Hickory Run many of times with family and friends. Shades of death trail is great with the kids, along with boulder field which we all loved! Highly recommend seeing Hawk falls too. If your in the area and love to hike, don’t pass it up!

Good for camping and hiking. Family friendly. The switchback trail is a nice 6-mile hike. Close to Jim Thorpe for dinner.

There is a long dirt road that goes up to the field. I suggest that you drive there on a day that is dry and sunny. The field is near the parking lot. We walked on a few boulders, and then sat on them, basking in the sunshine. Make sure you have study sneakers. Also proceed with caution since it is possible to slip and get your foot or leg jammed between boulders. I found the place to be a unique experience and would like to visit again.

How are the trails marked for snow shoeing? Are there specific trails?
Escrita el 9 de enero de 2021
We were there in the summer, so I have no idea about show shoeing. Sorry. We loved the park. Nice hikes!

Are there fire rings at the trailer sites? If no, can you bring one?

Are the trails leading to the falls recommend for young Children?
Escrita el 7 de agosto de 2019
Short answer is no. I have grandchildren ages 7 and 8 and I would wait until they are closer to 10 before taking them along the Glen falls trails.
Instead, I would recommend parking at PA 118 and hiking up Kitchen Creek trail. They could see three falls that way. Trail is about 1.5 miles to the Meeting Place of the two falls trails.

Which campground near by would you recommend? We would like to go tent camping and will have our dog with us. Additionally, we would like to be able to consume alcohol so would prefer not to stay in the State Park itself.

If fishing is what your gonna do get a license follow the rules! As for the best place to go that’s big boulder lake however it’s tough to get out on due to privacy but lake harmony is a great runner up. If fly fishing is your thing go try Lehigh river. I suggest these due to experience fishing in the park itself is tough due to times of draining them and restocking small fish! Don’t just dream it get out and do it!
