Monmouth Rebellion
sep de 2021
Battle of Sedgemoor Visitor Centre is an exhibition focused on the climax of the Monmouth Rebellion when the Duke of Monmouth attempted to depose his uncle, Kings James II. For such a small museum, the quality of the exhibition is impression. Sections describe the historical background, the planning, the progress of the battle and of course the aftermath.

It's really rare to find such a small museum with such a high quality exhibit in such a small place as Westonzoyland. if you're in Somerset, it's worthwhile make a detour to visit this museum. It's also located in the beautiful St Marys Church, which is worth a visit itself.

History on our doorstep!
ago de 2021
The Battle of Sedgemoor (aka The Pitchfork Rebellion) took place on 6th July 1685 and was the last battle fought on English soil. King James II and his army were too strong and highly trained for the so-called local "pitchfork army" supporters of the Duke of Monmouth, the pretender to the English throne. The local army were roundly beaten by the king's army which is when Judge Jefferies (the so-called hanging judge) took over. So, yesterday in the glorious sunshine, after a quick visit to St Mary's Church and the exhibition, we drove and walked on country roads to the site of the battle and the memorials there. Terrific history lesson. Loved it all! Highly recommended!

Westonzoyland battlefield

On a windy but sunny day we drove to westonzoyland,to find the site of the battle of Sedgemoor which I haven't visited since I went with my school in the sixties, off the main road done a dirt track could not see any sign posts so stopped a woman who was out for a walk ,she pointed us in the right direction and told us we came in from the wrong end that was why there was no sign posts, the memorial stones and information boards were very good on the side of the track commemorating the last cival battle on English soil, there was more memorabilia in the village church ,but we didn't go in there

Fascinating historic review of the last battle...

1685, the last battle on English soil, the battle of Segdemoor, where the King's army, James II defeated the pretender to the throne, Duke of Monmouth.
Fascinating hands on museum, audio, authentic maps, clouting, armoury, this is well worth an hour of any history buff's time.
Beautiful church to explore, donation and information pamphlet worth paying for.

Great Opportunity to see a mix of modern video descriptions of the Battle and why it happens and the aftermath.

The Last Battle On English Soil. Incredible to me that English people felt fear of a religion to go to such extreme actions to protect there future. I guess nothing changes around the world. Interesting depiction of the events leading up to the campaign and battle, the battle itself and the retribution. As a bonus it in the Church building that was turned into a prison holding the captured rebels.
Just walk in or on 1st Thursday of the Month go to the Sedgemoor Inn coffee morning next door and a Steward will guide your tour.

Worth making the trip

A very good description of the historical context. I learned this at school, but that was many decades ago and I had forgotten nearly all of it. The description of the campaign, the battle and the aftermath were all excellent as well, especially the video presentation.

This museum is in a lovely village church which is very interesting on its own but the display area for the Battle of Sedgemoor is small but very interesting and the video presentations is a must to watch and interact with. We spent almost an hour looking at the display and the church which were both enjoyable and informative. Well worth a visit and only a short walk from the battleground.

This display is inside the parish church and is made up of information boards and computerised images along with some videos and graphic maps. The build up, result and outcome of the battle are illuminated well and it is an interesting exhibition. An enjoyable visit.

A good summary of the battle of Sedgemoor, especially if visiting with children for a project.

Enough information to make sense of the history. If you are really interested in the history of the area, you should visit the Blake Museum in Bridgwater, a surprising Tardis of a place with free admission and lots of interesting artefacts.
