This outpost was an important link in the San Antonio-El Paso trade route. It’s hard to imagine living there over 100 years ago!

We enjoyed being able to see the way our ancestors lived in this rugged area of Texas. They also have a nice pathway for you to see the natural vegetation in the area. Well worth seeing.

Very well laid out self-guided tour when we were there. Helpful staff, worth the time to stop and see.

This was right on our way to Big Bend so we pulled in. Hauling a 22' travel trailer but there was room to park in the lot and get in and out easily. It was $5 for adults, Children 12 and under are free. Very well kept and right up our alley for learning about the settling of this area. Nature walk around the area outside too. We were there about an hour.

If you love history this is a great stop! Its more of a trading post and you can just walk around and wait until you see the wagon that they ued in that period of time!!

Fort Leaton is actually not a military fort but more like a trading post and the home is really grand for the location the era. Enclosed within the adobe walls is an ancient wooden ox cart that is massive. It is built without any metal, all wood put together with pegs. Even the axle is wooden. Super cool!

I only had a few minutes to stop and it was already pretty hot- but I could tell from the little I saw when I was in the gift shop that I want to come back some day. It looked well preserved and historically interesting. They had a nice, small gift shop. I recommend if you are in the area.

I gave it a 1 for not being open when the sign said they were and not being able to see it.Looked really interesting. Appeared to be an adobe walled frontier fort. What a disapointment!

Fort Leaton was established in 1848 and is named after former Indian bounty hunter Benjamin Leaton.
It is one of the largest and best preserved adobe structures in Texas and definitely worth a visit. Well, if you like History!
Guided Tours on the weekend, and self guided walking tours otherwise. Nice little gift shop. Expect to spend about one hour. There is a fee.

I like historic places and this one is very good. The history the building has seen is incredible and tells a interesting story. The museum is also worthwhile explaining the area and the history.
