Highly recommend a docent-led tour of this historic mansion. Our docent, Eve, brought the house to life, with historical perspectives and fascinating insights into Gen. Marshall's personal and professional lives. We were greatly enlightened by the tour and inspired to look further into the life of this giant of US history. We encourage you to take this in when you are in the Leesburg area.

Being from Germany, we are particularly grateful for the service of George C. Marshall. He was probably one of the most important people to secure freedom during the war and to secure peace, prosperity and freedom in Western Europe after the war. I don't think he gets enough credit, so I am glad that his home was saved from demolition and that there are volunteers like Michelle who keep his legacy alive by telling us stories about this great man. I always love it when a tour guide seems to enjoy themselves as much as we do. Thank you! Mahalo! Danke!

This beautiful estate of George Marshall befits a great man he was as one of the greatest Americans of 21st Century. A prince among men, he embodied public service and fighting tyranny and served as model soldier and statesman for many people across generations. Looking around this beautiful manor we were filled with both honored to visit a place which General Marshall called home and were sad to once again realize that he is no longer among us. His memory, however, thanks to countless fans, during and after his time, lives on, mostly thanks to the great volunteers at the George Marshall Foundation. If you are looking for a beautiful, yet important, historical place, look no further; come and visit George C. Marshall's Dodona Manor.

After visiting the George C. Marshall Library on the campus of Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia, my wife and I were encouraged to visit Marshall's home in Leesburg, Virginia. Located at 312 East Market Street, Dodona Manor was Marshall's home from 1941 until his death in 1959. During that time, he had a distinguished military and political and diplomatic career that saw him serve as Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army during World War II, Secretary of State, President of the American Red Cross and Secretary of Defense. And he was namesake of the Marshall Plan that rebuilt Europe after World War II. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1996. It was named Dodona Manor before Marshall purchased it, the name deriving from Dodona, a shrine in ancient Greece where priests interpreted the rustling of oak leaves as messages from the gods. It was considered to be second in prestige only to Delphi. The two-story house with five-course American brickwork was built in the early 1800s. A Federal-style wing with Flemish bond brickwork and keystone arches was added in the mid-1820s. An addition to increase the number of bedrooms was completed in 1860. Marshall added a stone court and changed the wooden porch to a more durable brick. What is unique about Dodona Manor among historic houses is over 90 percent of the furnishings and memorabilia in the house were owned and used by Marshall and his wife.

My wife and I enjoyed our tour of Dodona Manor yesterday.

It was a first-rate tour about a remarkable person, a giant figure in twentieth-century history in America. Our docent, Eve Young, brought knowledge and insight to the tour, and her enthusiasm and speaking skills were compelling.

The manor is tastefully furnished, and you get a sense of the personalities of General and Mrs. Marshall from the interiors; it's a home that's magnificent, but at the same time it's a home that you feel comfortable in.

We were so lucky to have Audrey as our docent. We have toured many historical homes, and her tour tops them all! So much history happened at Dodona. Audrey's tour made it come alive for us! You could almost see it happening in front of you! Thank you for such a wonderful experience!

The General George C. Marshall House, Dodona Manor, is a fitting tribute to a remarkable soldier, diplomat, and public servant. The house itself has been extensively (and expensively) restored, and it contains many of General and Mrs. Marshall’s furnishings, mementos, and personal effects. Our docent, Bob Pohtas, generously shared his time and deep knowledge of the Marshalls and their place in history.

We went to Dodona Manor, the historic house museum of George C. Marshall (1880-1959) in Leesburg. We spent two hours with Silas, our exceptional guide. The Marshalls acquired this house in 1941. Silas’ knowledge of General Marshall and of his 2nd wife, Katherine, was extraordinary. He took us throughout the house, telling accounts about both along the way. General Marshall was a decorated hero of both World War I and II. He proposed the European Recovery Plan which became known as The Marshall Plan. He was a Nobel Prize winner in 1953—received for Peace. His contributions to this country and the world are immeasurable and quite impossible to list. He is one of those Greats given to us by Providence when most needed. Leaving our knowledgeable and dedicated guide, Silas told us ours was only his third or fourth tour!
We went outside to visit the re-created gardens. George grew vegetables. Burpee would give him seeds to experiment with. His wife--a stage actor who had become friends with Madame Chiang Kai-shek--grew roses. Just enough was learned about this extraordinary couple to encourage one to learn more.
