This is a 15 mile trail starting in Lone Rock at the end of Richland St. It travels NW on a railroad bed to the north side of Richland Center, ending at the city swimming pool. There is no sign marking the north terminus, and the trail bypasses the center of Richland Center. There is a great Bakery at the corner of Court and Central.
The trail going north from Lone Rock is a slight incline and follows about 70' west of Hwy 14 for 5 miles. This makes for a very noisy ride. The next 11 miles is away from highways, and the last 4 miles are paved.
The trail is used by snowmobiles in winter and should be a very pleasant ride in summer. However, the trail is not being maintained well as of this writing. The gravel bed is scored from early spring use by vehicle tires, bike ruts, boot impressions, and frequent animal holes which have eroded. It appears that some maintenance was attempted but was ineffective. Instead of enjoying scenery, we had to be on a continual watch for dangerous conditions, which included a few soft sand sections.
We were happy to try it once and we enjoyed Richland Center. Round trip was 34 miles. Best way to try it is with a fat-tire e-bike. We wish we could have done it that way.

This trail is part of the, "Rails to Trails " program. It is not paved. We have been hit with many floods and at the county parks comission they try so hard to keep up. See the oxbow, Tamaracks, other wild life.

I've read some reviews by those biking the trail that it's a rough ride, but we regularly walk parts of the trail that runs from Lone Rock to Richland Center and (at parts) it's beautful! While part of the trail runs directly next to noisy Hwy 14, most of the trail outside of Richland Center meanders through woods and prairie with passes over the Pine River on several bridges. We prefer to start our hikes at a parking lot in Twin Bluffs.

My friend and I decided to try the Pine River Bike Trail after finding it in the Travel Wisconsin official biking guide. We were not impressed beyond the little trail within the city limits. The paved part is great. Hard to know where to go if you wanted to go North, no idea where the trail continued, so we went South. The paved part turned into gravel, which was not bad but then it turned into rutted up, (looked like a tractor went through there) dirt road. There are also no markers to let you know how far you have to the next town or how far you have gone. (I know an odometer would be the key for that) We were just not very impressed. We also spent an hour driving around trying to find where to park and access the trail.

I rode this trail east from Richland Center to Lone Rock and back. The first 4 miles of the trail is paved and some of it recently paved. After that it is gravel, and sparse gravel in spots. This trail would NOT be suitable for a road bike in the non-paved sections. I ride a hybrid with 32c wide tires and I would go no narrower. The surface is somewhat rough and soft in spots. A mountain bike with some suspension would be a better choice. On the far east end it parallels State Hwy 14 and you do get some highway noise for a couple of miles. There is water at a wayside on the east end, be careful with the road crossing to reach it. Other than that, there are no on trail facilities, with the exception of 2 porta-johns.
